Nice little application - JAlbum!

Most of you will more than likely have heard of this handy little app, but as I was off sick from work I threw a quick site together, take a butchers!

Its a great little application, there are few good ones out there now, Coppermine, JAlbum, Gallery (that we use here) that are all free. For home use of simple applications where you wish to allow many users they are so quick and maintainance free.

I quite like you simple layout there with the black base. Keep it clean and simple and you are nearly always onto a winner.

I tried quite a few 'skins' and that one seemed the best. Only critisism is the exif data is in blue... blue on black, not that legible!

I can see it well enough here, infact I am working on a new website where I am intending some of the desgin to be black with blue writing. If done correctly I don't see it being an issue.

..it's more than likely my monitor calibration at home then... been tinkering with it lately. Just taken a look at Coppermine, seems that has to be integrated into an existing PHP site? I like the JAlbum app as it's standalone that simply churns out a site.. I'm concentrating on my photography before I move on to web design!

Yes Coppermine and Gallery are both dependant on PHP and a MySql database but I guess that’s what makes them so powerful. By today’s web hosting package standards most will have that included in the most basic package anyway.

Yes like you I would like to be able to concentrate on the photography but as that needs a website to display it all professionally, especially as my livelihood may depend on it, I have to get something together that’s at least half decent besides a simple gallery.

..definately.

It's mainly a hobby for myself at the moment, and in time I would like to be able to create a good website, hopefully as the course I'm on progresses my photography will improve.. then I can start thinking about a website.

downloaded it but haven't had time to try it yet, or update the site. I'm a bit fed up with that layout but I can't be bothered changing it

..It didn't work first time for me. Apparently you just copy the .jar file over the top of the installation of 5.x. There is a nice skin called blubluplus (I think thats its name)

If you can spare some time in the future you should really consider learning how to create your own site. I know the endless stream of acronyms (HTML, PHP SQL, CSS etc) can be very daunting but once you learn one of them the rest get easier every time.

For a mechanic, fixing your first car will be quite daunting. Subsequent cars may have slightly different engine layouts but they're basically the same.

The flexibility you have when designing your own site is immense. There is simply no way on earth I could've made my site by using pre-written scripts. It would've looked like a cobbled-together mess (which is exactly what the first version of my site did look like, because I cobbled it together from other people's scripts).

Also, you'll invariably want to add new bits/functions to the site as time goes on. And writing it yourself means you can add them in seamlessly. And because you wrote the other bits, you know exactly how to integrate it with them.

In short, it'll be time well spent. A fair old amount of time, I'll grant you. But well spent nonetheless.

.. yes I understand completely. Did you write your site from scratch, or using an application of some kind? Acronyms don't bother me, as I work in IT anyway... but I've never been much of a developer. We had a site here at work once that used PHP, but I dont know where to even start with it.. is it a case of coding from scratch, or using some application that helps put it all together? I might take a look out of interest.. gives me something to do on these dark nights!

Your site looks great!
