Nissan Skyline GTR32 - Model
I was at home yesturday afternoon so thought I would entertain myself by taking some object type photos. I've been reading about different angle of light etc...
I have some different shots to upload but this is the first... It's a model of the Nissan Skyline GTR32... It's not quite right - I might try a polorizing filter next tme to reduce some of the glare...The blue streak on the front screen is the reflextion from my computer mouse. One technical question...I shot this with a tripod at F11 because I didn't want a shallow depth of field...the camera was position quite close to the object...but the back part of the car is not sharp...? I am using the kit lens 18mm-55mm.... C+C Welcome....

Nice car
.....I would just experiment with differing f settings and see which produces the best results.

Re: Nissan Skyline GTR32 - Model
The closer you get to an object, the narrower an aperture you need to get near front-to-back focus. If you were further away, the nit probably would be all in focus. With my macro lens, even at f/64 things aren't all sharp when I'm a few centimetres away...

Re: Nissan Skyline GTR32 - Model
As Jack has rightly said, the DoF reduces as you get closer. basically, the DoF is relative to the focal distance from object to sensor. So, if you think that way, you will see the relativbe difference.
imagine an object that is 10 cms long front to back. if the front is 20 cms from the lens, the distance from front to back is one third of the entire focal range (stretching from 20 to 30cms from the sensor). if you have the camera further away, let's say 40cms, then the object will go from 40cms to 50cms away from the sensor, this now represents a relative distance of 20% or one fifth of the focal range. So, if you use the same aperture at both distances, the depth of field will be different due to relative difference in focal lengths. I hope that is explained properly. Cheers, Rob

Re: Nissan Skyline GTR32 - Model
There was a lengthy and interesting discussion on hyperfocal distance here.
Rob has explained it here, but once you have got your head around that, you might find it interesting. It is worth remembering that the depth of field extends further behind the focal point than in front, and you can use this to put the depth of field where you want it. As has been said, when shooting close up, the DoF is reduced If your camera has a preview button you can check the depth of field before you take the shot. Sometimes it is called a stop-down button. BTW - nice motor

Re: Nissan Skyline GTR32 - Model
I meant to say as well that the picture looks better for not being all in sharp focus so I wouldn't change it
The sharpest part is the front and we see the name of the car quickly because it is in white, then our eye enjoys the rest of the guy but without worrying about a lot of detail further down the back where there really isn't much detail anyway.Cheers, Rob |
