NRM - York

Went to the York Railway Museum, but wasn't feeling inspired so I decided to try some closeups. They have one engine on a stand, with the wheels slowly rotating I tried a long exposure and was quite happy with this result.

Interested in other opinions ...

I also like the end result, rather than being of an engine I thought it was the wheels of a old steam train and to catch them moving at this distance gives the shot a different edge.

Nice choice of SS to catch the motion.

Re: NRM - York

Yup, like that Dan, you've gaught an unusual image very well there. The slow SS has worked great. At first, i too thought it was wheels but then realised they would have to be going round without the train moving to get a shot like that so couldn't be the case.

Good work, works great... and I love the York Railway museum, lovely place. I also like the Elephant and Castle museum which (used to, not been for years) had a recreation of an old street in perfect detail. The sweet shop in the street was a recreation of my uncle's sweet shop! Those were the days <g>

Cheers,
Rob

Love the picture - made a change from the shots I and I expect most others come back from York with. Great place for boys of all ages, especially poking round in the "storeage" area with racks and racks of odds and ends.

Re: NRM - York

Thanks for your comments guys, I was looking for something different and it seems I got that bit right at least.

Rob & Steve, it is a Steam Engine's wheels, the engine's lifted up on a stand and the wheels are turned very slowly, powered by electricity. This was a 1 second exposure, handheld but resting on a perspex fence put there to stop fingers getting in the gubbins.

It was lit by a couple of lamps and liberally oiled which is why it gleams so much. The odd angle is to crop out some trays which were catching the oil.
