One from (almost) this time last year

Rewind the clock just over a year ago and I was in the middle of a three-week vacation that took me from Toronto > Arizona > NYC > New Jersey... I've just been browsing the shots I took - all 1300 of them! - and I wish I could be back right here:

The Grand Canyon at Sunset

D2X, AF-S 17-55mm DX lens at 17mm, 1.5 sec exposure at f/5.6 (tripod and cable release used)

I tell ya; no matter how many times you've seen it in the movies, it has to be experienced first-hand... no simple photograph can ever do it justice.

Re: One from (almost) this time last year

Glad you added the last line as I can never get photos to replicate really impressive landscapes, the way the naked eye sees them.

Lovely range of tones in your shot

Must admit I regret not going to the GC after spending 3 days in las Vegas

Pictures may not be able to do it justice but this one is on it's way to doing so, great sense of scale!

Re: One from (almost) this time last year

Thanks for all the positive comments; I'm going to get this one printed at 20 x 30" for the house - not something I do all that often, but I keep being drawn back to this scene

I'm not surprised, it's a great shot, good composition and nice colours... I'd proudly have it on my wall if it was mine

It certainly was; seeing as I only had about an hour's worth of light before sundown, I spent a fair bit of time moving from spot to spot, trying to work out the best place to set up the 'pod to shoot.

Part of the problem was that the place was so full of people that it was impossible to set up for a clean shot in any direction - so I just had to wait until folks started leaving to get into position.

At an elevation of over 6000 feet, it starts to get pretty chilly in the desert as soon as the sun dips below the horizon, and most folk had left well before then. Although you don't really see it in the shot above, the first stars were becoming visible and I could have stayed out their all night if it wasn't for the fact we needed to travel a fair distance back to where we were staying.

Still, I know I'll be going back one day and, next time, I'll be sure to set aside a few more hours down at the Canyon

Fantastic shot, maybe one day my landscape photography will be as good. Excellent work !!

I would love to see a larger version of this for the detail and impact.
