One from today

As it was so hot outside, I have been doing some indoor photography today. I set out to shoot something for the competition but that didn't work and I ended up getting distracted along the way.

The result was that I only shot half a dozen frames and out of those this is the only keeper.

Canon 20D, 50mm MkII, Kenko extention tube, 2 secs @ f18, tripod, mirror lockup, shot in RAW and processed using Rawshooter and Adobe CS.

Comments welcomed.

Steve, it's very nice - the black background and the backlighting really works well here, and the subject is really suited to the monochrome treatment. The use of a black frame is also perfect for this subject.

The only thing bugging me is I can't feel comfortable about the framing and I'm not sure why exactly - I'm struggling to suggest anything which would work better though. I've been looking at it for a good five minutes and the only thing I can come up with is possibly more space needed over the top of the flower head? Without that inner frame of white lines it feels better to me - I think. :?

EDIT

What I'd do is delete that inner frame leaving a plain black background then just crop the bottom of the shot level with the bottom of the flower stem. Leave your signature where it is. The shot has a simple beauty and I think the frame is distracting from that and isn't needed.

I am not sure what you are saying CT apart from removing the inner white line. Are you saying that I should edit out some of the flower or add in some more space around it and if the latter, where?

Last try. Ive re-sized the thistle to give more space over the top and given it a slight lean to the left.

I'll leave you alone now Steve!

Thanks CT for all your effort and work and I can see where you where heading with your idea.

For me though what we have here now is just two very similair photographs and I think dod summed it up perfectly...

I prefer the original composition over the modified version.
Good use of the thirds rule and the space around the subject is balanced top/right and bottom.

Great shot IMO.

Was this staged Steve.
