Orton Imagery
Hope I'm doing this right;
I came across a technique by Michael Orton, which gives a painterly,romantic effect. Suitable subject matter is very important, ie:- landscape's. What do you think,(gently please)...Kenny Ps, I did try to load more than one image and failed ![]() PPS, Have the other pic I wanted. The first is the original. ![]() I realy dont know how to post![]() ![]() Last edited by spacepacker : 23-02-2008 at 17:56. Reason: Added pic and text |

Re: Orton Imagery
yep i ha e used this technique a fair bit and you are right it definately needs the "right" image....... im not sure but i think it has been slightly over done in your image, and has left the sky burnt out and lacking detail.
It is a nice image with lovely colours but i would reduce the opacity of hte blurred layer even more than u have already done. Fi |

Re: Orton Imagery
Hi Kenny,I have never tried this 'Orton' technique.To be honest,I prefer the 'straight' version but
...like Fiona I think you are on to something if the effect was toned down a bit and maybe a crop to the top of the lovely tree and a bit of the left side,up to the watering can perhaps?.It is definately worth giving this one a few different 'goes' at the Orton to see what you yourself prefer as it is a nice image![]() John. Edit:Kenny,if you decide to have another go at this I would be keen to see it

Re: Orton Imagery
I like both, and I think you have done a very good job for your first try. I think as a piece of art, kind of blending the division between painting and photography, but without paint, #2 is great, I really like the softness, making the colours more vivid, and the colour range lends itself to this. Good work

Re: Orton Imagery
Thanks to every one, perhaps I should give the site for the info' which is below.
Water, yes I will try some more and I will post. Fiona, I like your effort very much. Nowthat I have posted my images from my gallery, can I now delete from my gallery as they do not make much sense sitting there; if so, how....Kenny Creative Nature Photography - Orton Imagery |

Re: Orton Imagery
I am not a fan of this style so perhaps difficult to give a balanced opinion here but I'll try.
I think you've done a decent job of applying the technique, slightly too strongly but it is effective. The red is very strong and I think that could do with toning down slightly. The reason I am not keen on the technique is that, as a glasses wearer, it sort of reminds me of the extremely irritating effect of walking into a warm building from a cold outside which steams your glasses up and makes everything look blurred. Perhaps the fact I hate that when it happens is why I don't like the Orton effect, everything looks a touch out of focus and doesn't appeal. It's all a taste thing of course and I can entirely understand that this technique is popular with some, in the same way as mono is popular with others and so forth. Good job we don't all go for the same things ![]() Cheers, Rob
