Palace Hotel, Manchester

I've been in Manchester for the first time this week to attend a course which was being held at the hotel where we were staying. What a building - large, foreboding and obviously built to last with some quirky architectural features. I had my camera with me but only the kit lens and no tripod so capturing photos was challenging, not much light outdoors and indoors many types of lighting making colour balance a bit of a nightmare.

I've tried to process some of the shots to bring out the magnificence of the hotel whilst at the same time trying to give period feel to them.

Something a bit different for me, hope you enjoy them.

Particularly like the first 3 mono's - very moody with a real look of antiquity.

The tight monos are quite good.

But the one that struck me was the last one because it was taken from such a different angle.

Re: Palace Hotel, Manchester

what a great set, like all the monos and the second to last one is also particularly impressive as you didn'y have a tripod!!!

I have to say I'm with sawduct, I'm sure the hotel couldn't help but be impressed if you showed them!!!

Some really interesting shots there Hacker! It reminds me of what an internet acquaintance once said to me "imagine your camera is a spaceship", encouraging me to take some pictures at unusual angles - you've certainly done that!

Re: Palace Hotel, Manchester

Hi Hacker,

As you can see this is, originally, the Refuge Insurance building. Like many buildings in that locality it has changed use from the time I worked at the Daily Herald, in the Editorial Library, mid-1950s to 1970. You will see part of the old Odhams Press buildings just under the railway bridge on Oxford Road, now a Spar shop. I do have a colourslide of the Refuge sign, on the tower, that I took from the roof of the Daily Herald.

When I had my secondhand books shop in the City I had regular visits from aircrews staying at this hotel, usually Delta airlines of Atlanta.

Re: Palace Hotel, Manchester

I love this set Hack, really captures the essence of that building and interior. I particularly like the last two, the last for its low angle and the penultimate shot for the way it shows the busy-ness of the reception of this hotel., not in terms of people numbes buit in terms of it being a dynamic scene, not something static.

This is not a bunch of individual shots, this is a true Picture Set which could make a superb multi-frame and I think the hotel could very well be interested in purchasing that for display somewhere.

Excellent work,
Rob
