Peacock 'eyes'

This is a set of macros I did today as I found this feather and thought I'd see how much detail I could pull out with my 100mm f2.8 macro on the 40D. I used Live View with x5 magnification for focusing which helps a lot. I am happy with two of the three, the widest shot has a bit too shallow DoF. I wanted it to blur at the edges where they curled over but not quite so much on the main plane of the 'eye'. The closest in shot is the sharpest and I managed to get it pretty much sharp across the plane by going right down to f22.

BTW, none of the shots are cropped, these are the full-frame shots in each case. The last one, my least favourite, is stronger in colour as I used different lighting. The other two were both shot using the MR14 EX macro ringflash. I used a 1/8th left-biased ratio just to add a touch of definition to the fronds so that they weren't too flat.

Hope you like them,
Cheers,
Rob

Re: Peacock 'eyes'

Fantastic colours on these Rob, The second one may have worked better had you zoomed im a fraction more so that there is no background showing through, but that is only my opinion and taste, I can see how it breaks the image up in a nice way but for my taste not quite right.
