Photos from Southern france

As you may be aware I have just come back from a short break to Provence in Southern France. Rather than flood a thread with a load of pictures all at once I am going to trickle a few shots in here every day for the next few days. This should make the thread a little easier to follow and hopefully keep it interesting too. I did this a while ago when I spent some time in Kirkland nr the Lakes and it was well received then, so hopefully it will work this time as well

Ok we stayed in a small village called Gordes, it sits on top of a mountain and overlooking a valley on one side with a sharp dip and then a slow rise on the other. The geological location meant that sunrise could be caught looking up the valley with Gordes in the foreground, while at sunset it benefited from wonderful light on the old town with the valley in the distance. Basically it is a perfect subject for a landscape photographer . As we stayed there for almost two weeks I took the opportunity to get up before sunset many times and set up early to get the shots. This seems like a suitable starting point for the photos in this thread…

This is what Gordes looks like from in the valley.

and this was the sunrise on one morning

More to follow tomorrow

Comments welcomed.

I can see we're in for a treat over the next few days...Only problem is i'm spending the week in Barcelona so will miss it uuntil get home.
I like the first one with the road, it leads you up into the town nicely!
I also like the last one a whole heap!

Well done, i only hope this standard can be maintained with the others...I'm sure you'll manage it.

I think there was only 3 mornings that I was not up before sunrise, the first after we had driven down, one after a heavy night and one where the weather had been a bit rough during the night.

I don't know about maintaining a standard. the ones that I will be showing here are very mixed in subject matter so some will appeal while others I am sure, will not.

Have a great trip to Barcelona!!!

Re: Photos from Southern france

You have seen Gordes from a distance but as you would image, it’s a quaint place with many narrow and winding streets. Dues to its location and how it looks it’s a tourist trap. From early in the morning through to late in the evening they mooch around which makes it quite difficult to get shots with no tourists and nice light.

Not far away from Gordes is another small town called Roussillon. Also quite pretty but the main reason people visit it is due to its location.

It is situated on another hillside overlooking a valley but the cliffs are made up of ochre with its vividly bright shades of orange and yellow. You can walk through this valley after parting with a few Euros and it looks surreal and like a films set out of a science fiction movie.

Here we have my partner well equiped with her camera gear taking a close up shot, I took the oppotunity of including her in this shot to add a sense of scale.

More to follow...
