Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
Ok folks, another chance to vote for colour or mono. I am doing this for a purpose, not just for fun. I know we have a widespread range of opinions on mono and colour on this forum ranging from the 'Just put everything in mono' brigade to those who have no real preference. I fall into the band of 'I love mono but I also love colour and want whatever looks best' and because of that I am looking for opinions on what type of shots work well when converted and which maybe lose something.
My previous pair came out strongly in favour of colour because it had such a strong coloured reflection that was lost in mono. But what about this time? Poole is the home of the RNLI who do a fantastic job around our coastline saving countless lives without renown or reward. I wanted a shot of their pilot boats (they work alongside the coastguard in looking after Poole Harbour, the 2nd largest natural harbour in the world) that set them in context. The lifting bridge is distinctive as there are only three of these in the whole of Europe. Ok, what sayest thou? Colour.... ![]() or Mono... ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
wow Rob, this takes me back, I grew up in Poole and spent many an afternoon exactly opposite where you took this photo on the ballast quay fiahing for bass!!! (It's now all Sunseeker I think)
Whereabouts in Poole are you Rob?? I definately prefer the colour one, the colours seem very vivid though I don't know if the saturation is a little strong?? Cheers Matt |

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
I didn't touch the saturation on that Matt, tis just the sunlight on the boats. I know where you mean for the fishing and yes it is all Sunseekers along there now though the other side of the bridge is still Sydenhams as has been for many decades.
I am on the edge of Canford Heath, literally the heathland is right out of my kitchen window. I have lived in Poole since 1984 and can't bear to imagine living anywhere else now, it really is such a lovely place to live so i count my blessings each and every day that I get to live here ![]() If ever you fancy coming down for a day trip, let me know and we can meet up and wander the quay together cameras in hand ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
sounds great Rob, I'm down quite often, my parents still live down there in Corfe Mullen. I'm sure I will have passed your house many times on my way to my weekend job at Burger King at Tower Park!!!
The next time I come down, I will drop you a line, I keep thinking of various places I need to get down there to fire off a few shots!! Matt |

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
The mono really does nothing for me, but looking at it i would say it is just a quick greyscale conversion. I will plum for the colour.
I remember reading a few years ago, didn't an elderly lady drive straight off the harbour edge (at the point where you catch the ferry from Poole to Studland?) accidently thinking the road didn't stop? or am i thinking of the Portsmouth ferry! |

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
You are absolutely right... it was the chain ferry from haven point to studland. It was on the front of the evening echo, bless her!!!!

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
To be honest I prefer the colour shot, but!!! it seems to lack a focal point, should we be looking at the boats or the bridge, it just seems a bit confusing as to what exactly it is a photograph of.

Colour for me for sure
![]() The photo I think is a little busy and this effect just seems worse in the mono shot. |

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
To local people (designed for locals this one!) the shot is immediately obvious as the Poole Lifting Bridge is a landmark. Sydenhams is one of the most well-known local businesses having been there for over a hundred years and the Harbour Pilot boats connect this to the Harbour for which Poole is most famous.
That was my thinking anyway and when local people look at it, that is the way they always see it but I guess to people for whom the image is just boats and a bridge it doesn't have the same effect. Cheers, Rob |

Re: Poole lifting bridge and lifeboats
Yup, Rob.
Goes to what has been said many times before. A picture has to tell a story. Obviously, it tells a very strong story to you guys, but to us who have never been there, it is just a photograph. (no offense). skip |
