Portraits

Evening all, I've been doing some portrait photography of late - (Using the White Room style) here a some I took of my daughters..... converted to a high key look...... and cropped to add some difference to the 70 odd shots I have so far from the shoot.

Pretty contemporary looking portraits, which i like. The High key's a little full on for me. The last two are the ones i prefer, the last being the best of them (in my opinion naturally)

Two good looking children, and you've done them justice

In a portrait like this I would think that the eyes would be most important, and you seem to capture them best in the second shot. I like that one alot.

I like high key portraits, but they're notoriously difficult to do well and really need setting up properly for before you take the shot. I seldom see many shopped high key portraits which really work, but you are so close with these.

The last one is the best for me. If you could have just retained the detail in the left side of her face which you have in the right side, it would have been pretty well perfect. Definitely something you should persevere with.

Hmm. Potraits... White Room... ah-huh... High-key... (scribbling down notes for future reference).

Is lighting positioning important here? To get a bit more shadows on the face to obtain more "detail"?

I like them!

The cropping is dramatic, which I like. I would liek to know how you lit the subject. Any data?

I am sure you will find space on your wall for these fine shots.

Lighting was a three light set up. Two flash units + umberellas behind the subject and pointing away which gets rid of any background detail.(Whiteout) Third flash set up was traditionally in front of the subject directed at around 45 degrees to one side, this was used with a bigger umberella. Background was a large white 7ftx7ft Lastolite pop up background. Floor was covered with a 7ft wide roll of white studio photography paper. Many of the other shots I've got are sat / laid / kneeling down so the white room effect is carried through from the floor to the ceiling.
(Appologies if I'm unclear )

Thanks are to my mate Dave who has let me use his studio set up on a couple of occasions, allowed me to get a wealth of shots suitable for framing etc........

Nice series.
Good detail in the eyes, on all of them. The set is made by the way you have managed to hold the detail in the eyes. Also some good/brave cropping, there are not many people (though maybe it is getting more mainstream) that would crop so much of the face out in a portrait.
3rd one for me is the best, the hair and the way the features are clearly defined make that one stick ot for me. Shame that the 1st ones face blends into the background, just needs some kind of edge just to stop the two merging. Can't quite put my finger on what it is about the 2nd one that i want to say.
Definitely onto a good thing with these though.
