Here's a cropped one too.

The original is too dark and I am struggling to get any detail back in the bear.

was the original in RAW? If not, try using New adjustment layer>curves to bring it up a bit more

great capture.....how/why/where?

Unfortunately the image is jpeg, not raw.

Was taken last September in Canada. Turned up at a hide and waited to see what arrived. Must have seen a dozen different bears over the course of 2 hrs .

It was overcast and raining. I was using a Canon 10D but did not have a clue how to use it. I had a Fuji S602 with me and I struck up conversation with a chap in the room opposite when we met in the corridor. He was carrying an SLR, and when I commented on it he offered to lend me one! He had a Mark I and 2 10D's (His & Hers + spare).

Anyway, had it for a couple of hours and the Fuji felt like a toy when I went back to it. Was just the push I needed to buy a 20D when I got back

Lens was a sigma - I think it was a 100-200mm.

More shots of the bears here. As you can see they are a little dark, and thats after I have had an attempt at improving them. The tutorial from Matt is useful and I should get round to starting again on the originals.
