Re: A rainy day in Paris
The Seine looks pretty muddy.
So I would crop out most of the river and put the red bus in a "thirds" junction by cropping the left side. Quite honestly, there still would be a lot of brown and gray in the image, so the red bus has to be the focal point. You might up the contrast a bit, or even convert to mono to see how it looks. skip |

I love the sky in this shot, tho i do agree with Skip the river totally spoils the shot. But apart from that good work.

Re: A rainy day in Paris
yep i would also take away a good portion of the river, and perhaps clone out the overhanging branches at the top. or clone more of them in maybe

Re: A rainy day in Paris
Sorry but are you sure that#s a red bus? I don't think it is. It looks like it is window canopies on that building. The problem I have with this is only that the only way I know this is a rainy day and in Paris is because you have told me. I can see some dark clouds but no evidence of any rain at all, no splatter circles on the water or whatever. Also no distinguishing landmarks that tell me this is Paris. In fact if you hadn't said anything I would have just assumed it was London despite not recognising any buildings as they are not famous or anything like that. I guess the colour of the water helps as there are not many rivers quite as dirty as the Seine despite its romantic reputation. Even the Thames isn't that dirty and that is saying something!
I am not sure whether it is that you have over saturated or over-sharpened the sky or what but the strong halo around the central building and along a lot of the skyline makes it look as though you have added the sky or done something in post-pro that has caused it. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem with a different sky being added, that's been done since photographic time immemorial and is perfectly acceptable. My reason for suspecting the sky as not being 'right' (and of course I could be entirely wrong) is that the reflected light and colours in the river don't match. Looking at the water beneath the second boat along, it shows a bright strip of light between the two buildings' dark reflections yet the sky at that point is dark grey. Anyway, putting that aside, light does play tricks and so it could just be a quirk of the angle here causing that, I wonder whether a letterbox shot would work better with half the muddy river cropped off? Oh and stick the Eiffel tower in the background so we know where it is (Just kidding!)Cheers, Rob

For me, wrong lens or wrong position. Maybe if there was a bridge nearby a more diagonal shot from the centre? The letterbox crop with most of the water taken out works better. |

Oops.....from my usual viewing distance, it looked like a bus...when I moved closer, it was obvious.
Everyone should see the oculist once a year anyway, Dab. |

Re: A rainy day in Paris
I am sorry, but this one doesn't hold a lot of interest. It could be any street in any city, and there is nothing going on. It is bland.
Don't take this personally, Shadoah, but there are so many wonderful things to capture in Paris and indeed, all of France, that you must go out and create artistry. And maybe the Tower from a radically different view? ![]() skip |

Re: A rainy day in Paris
thats mt point ...thanks ,that happens to be Ile Saint-Louis anyone who has been to Paris or even studied about it would know the street . I posted the picture because someone mentioned that they had no idea that the pic was Paris unless I told them, I dont take offense most times but it seems to me, that was a bit tacky to actually critique my photo because it was not cliche enough. Photography is art and there is not one person on this board who has taken the "Perfect" shot. sometimes I just take photos and I am not thinking the rule of thirds or is it in "Perfect" focus or the river is muddy I just capture what I am feeling and try and convey that, That Rainy day in Paris was "muddy" and dark and brown and it felt exactly how that pic looks.

Re: A rainy day in Paris
Shadoah
I understand your displeasure here....but from my point of view, there is only one reason to take a picture....to create some sort of feeling for the viewer. Now, that may be a remembrance of a great vacation for the photographer, or a gloomy rainy day in Paris, or some other emotion. However, if the image doesn't create that feeling, then it is less than successful. Of course every viewer sees an image differently and no image is perfect for everyone. Second point, even on the sharing thread here, a lot of us tend to view the images critically and comment in that vein. This helps us to focus, and hopefully, helps everyone to learn. One of the really great things about this site is that nobody takes the comments as a personal affront, even though occasionally we can be pretty harsh. As you know, it is not easy to convey meaning and emotion through a computer. So, hang in there, and keep posting. But don't be upset (if you are), cause that is what I read into your comments. skip |
