Randoms 5th Oct 2005

Believe it or not I took all these pics today. Just had one of those rare ones where I kept seeing stuff I liked. Anyway less talk, more pics. Here.

The creative juices were obviously flowing!
(I haven't taken a single shot in over 3 weeks..to damned busy)

I like all of these

The autumn leaf one is a gret candidate for b&w with the leaf left in colour :icon_cool

You may be right there. So, erm... How would I do that, again?

Thanks for the feedback.

I see a good eye for this stuff developing there Jamey. I like the mug on the pillar box.

I wouldn't do a colour/B&W combo for your leaf shot. It's sometimes a valid technique, but I always find this a bit dodgy without a very good reason. You have the valid reason with this shot I think, but apart from that bar just above the leaf, the shot is virtually mono anyway, so I'd just selectively desaturate that bar, leaving the rest of the shot in subdued natural colour - as seen and shot.

Nice one. That works really well. Did you use a feathered selection or is there a desaturate tool?

There is desaturate tool, but I used a slightly feathered selection and just slid the saturation down.

Thanks CT. Will give it a go later on the hi-res.

This leaf pic is another example of one that I just snapped for the hell of it (was basically a sharness test for the 50mm) and it turns out to be the most popular of the bunch. In fact, of the two forums I've posted these images on every single person has picked out that one. Weird.

Ok, here's my version two of the leaf. The gold bar is desaturated, there's a very slight vignette and I've sharpened it a bit more this time.

Jamey, I hope I am mistaken but to me the sharpest part of your leaf picture is not the leaf but the wood above and to the left of it. I don't know if that section is slightly raised or even if you had your focus locked there but if not then maybe you have a back focus issue?

The point on the leaf on which I was focused is about level (in the plane of view) with the bit on the wood that's sharp. I think it's just that the wood has more detail in the texture than the leaf.

I am glad to hear that mate.

I just thought I should mention what I was seeing in case it had any bearing on the problems that you posted in the other thread.
