A Red Arrow...
Single shot of a very fast moving Red Arrow. Canon 20D with 100-400mm IS L series, hand held as it was moving too fast to track with a tripod.
It was a grey day so no lovely azure sky in the BG but that was beyond my control. i am still very happy with the detail I managed to capture. Cheers, Rob ![]() |

Re: A Red Arrow...
I'm impressed, cuz I tried this last year at RIATs with just a 70-200mm. Let's say it's a tad hard to get a sharp shot

Re: A Red Arrow...
Are the Red Arrows the same as our Blue Angels? Nice Picture.

Re: A Red Arrow...
Almost Mark but not quite, I'd say there is about 2 cms across the top and 1.5cms down the left side cropped.
I agree Dave, a damn hard subject to get sharp. I took 260 shots to get a small handful of good ones! As you know, the Red Arrows are a particular favourite of mine and I have hundreds of shots gathered over the last few years but in terms of shots that I would print out and sell, the list is probably still only just out of single figures. The poster I showed here a while back is still a good seller, especially when I take it to the show and sell to onlookers! 400 mph at a constantly changing distance is a swine to keep in sharp focus but hey, that's what makes them so satisfying when you get a good one :o) But given that the Red Arrows are unquestionably the best military display team on planet earth (agreed by all the other teams like the Blue Arrows, the Dakotas and so forth) they are worthy of being a tough act to capture on film/sensor! The perfect shot is still out there waiting for me.... perhaps what I need is a Canon 40D.... Darling, ..... ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: A Red Arrow...
I haven't got a vertical short like yours Dave, I am never central enough and usually spend most of the time with the big lens on which doesn't get wide enough to get the champagne shot in its entirety but I must do that next year, just stick the 24-70 f2.8 L on and see what I can get of the wider formation shots.
I have a few of the same formation but from an angle and closer in so you don't see the shape that you have captured. I like yours a lot actually, that mono works great. Anyway, for what it's worth, below is one of that formation in colour - hasn't caught the red of the planes very well as they had a bit too much back lighting. The angle of the lighting has given the smoke a rather bright hue as well. I also should have run the sky through a noise filter as it is breaking up a touch. Oh well, I still quite like it. See what you think. Cheers, Rob ![]() |

The blue smoke really makes this shot. Bet you had fun that day.

Re: A Red Arrow...
Well captured - goes a bit quicker than my feathered friends.
Have a chap in the village who used to be a Red Arrow Leader - now has a red electric trike to pilot as has MS. Lives opposite my old pal who was a WWII flying instructor before becoming a pro photographer. Bad news when we all get together as ex RAF myself. |

Re: A Red Arrow...
Hey Fang, me too! I am ex-RAF, I was a Medic but we are going back a fair old while now.... left the forces in 1980. But hey, do me a favour would you. As someone who has grown up with the Red Arrows, please if you get chance give the guy a message from me....
'I don't know you but I know you have contributed to the huge pleasure fans like me have received from Red Arrows displays over the last 40 years - and more for some! I just want to say a huge thank you to you and despite your flying days now being behind, want you to know we have not forgotten all the thrills you gave us. I wish you all the best in your life as you face the challenge of living with MS.' If I met him, I'd say exactly that so would be great if you could give him the message for me. Cheers, Rob |
