Red Squirrels

Just got back from a weekend visiting Martin Mere and Formby, weather was pretty grotty but we're a hardy bunch so it didn't cause any issues.

Squirrels were out and about but it was a bit dark under the trees so these were taken at quite high ISO and then noise reduction s/w used. Lot's of blurred attempts too, little terrors never seem to stay still for more than a second.

As usual, click on the shots for larger versions, comments and criticism welcome.

Re: Red Squirrels

Having spent all day yesterday on Brownsea Island in the middle of Poole Harbour with the largest colony of red squirrels in the UK, I can testify as tto how difficult they are to capture so I take my hat off to you Dan.

We only actually got to see two as it was a very grey day and they were not out and about as much as we had expected for the time of year. I had my 100-400mm lens on most of the day but got fed up waiting for a squirrel as I saw some good fungi waiting to be snapped. I put my 100mm macro lens on, shot away and then... yup, up pops a red squirrel and no chance to swap lens in time. So, i had to settle for a 100mm shot from a fair way away and crop heavily just to have a single shot of the little blighter. I was determined not to go home completely empty-handed so that at least gave me what I had come for. I'll be hoping for a lot better come spring when they wake up hungry and do a lot more foraging.

As is common with this kind of shot, using AF has meant the logs are sharpest focus but despite being a bit soft, the squirrels are caught well and I love the pose halfway up the branch.

Good work,

Rob

Re: Red Squirrels

It's a universal law, whenever a photo oppertunity briefly appears the correct lens is at the bottom of your bag.

Some nice shots of an elusive creature.
