Reflections on Coniston Water

I took this at about 7pm and the light was a lot lower than it looks here but if I had exposed to capture that light, you'd have seen little of the reflections and that is what I liked most. Not much of a focal point but I like the way it narrows down to the mist beyond.

This is the lake that Donald Campbell lost his life on while attempting to break the water speed record. His body remained unfound until about ten years ago. I am all for going for records and things but it is tragic that it cost him his life, a woman her husband and a girl her father

Anyway, just posted here for enjoyment but as always you are welcome to crit it.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Reflections on Coniston Water

Very nice Rob. This takes me back to my visit so long ago. I was struck by the stillness of the place, and you have captured that so well.

This, of course is the reason the speed records were done there. Through a quirk of fate, there is little wind in the valley, so the water is like glass most of the time.

The only suggestion I'd make is to consider cropping about 50-70% of the sky. This is pretty bland and I don't think losing some of it does any harm to the picture.

Re: Reflections on Coniston Water

That is very nice tranquil photograph Rob, It is one of those shots that you can just look at and look at.
It is a tragedy that he lost his life but I feel that he lost his life doing what he enjoyed, he would not have been the character that he was without his desire to do what he did. I love riding my motorbike and as you know am all too aware of the life threatening problems that doing so entails, however I would be a very dull boy if I didn't do it and am blessed with a wife and family who fully understand this.

Re: Reflections on Coniston Water

Thanks for the positive early comments guys.

Graham, I did try this shot with a lot less sky but felt it made it look a bit too narrow and ended up back at this size. When I look at it now, I have the same thought as you, but when I looked at it with the sky reduced, I wanted it back like this. Weird LOL.

Gary, yup I totally understand what you mean and I didn't really mean it to sound so critical, I have done plenty of adrenaline junkie events too in my time. I have done parachuting (12 jumps), parascending, scuba diving (qualified club instructor), speedway riding (rode for Rye House Juniors and a short spell for the now defunct Milton Keynes Knights) and hang-gliding when I was 13 which resulted in a terrifying and near-fatal accident that left me in hospital for close to 6 months with 28 separate bone breaks! I should say all the other stuff is stuff I did AFTER that accident so I haven't let a little thing like that accident stop me LOL. Of course, these days accidents and things don't stop me but my love for a certain lady who is more to me than life itself certainly makes me think twice

Coniston Water is certainly an amazing place for that kind of event and, scant consolation though it is, Mr Campbell's last view of this world was sure a pretty one!

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Reflections on Coniston Water

Lovely, peaceful image, the trees seem a touch too blue perhaps. I really do like the stillness of the water I never seem to be anywhere with my camera when the water is that mirror like.

cheers
