Richmond Park

Just had my first real day shooting with the D50 outside, went to Richmond park (just outside London, you non-englanders). Got 5 or so shots I like, but I'll put two on here for now, that I am not sure about, but are included in the 5.
#1: Too much going on? Wrong composition? I have a zoomed out-er version, but it just doesn't do the same things for me....
#2: (Is a farily large crop) Wrong composition? I think it might need a little more PP as well, what do you think?
Here they are:
#1

#2

Thanks guys,

Re: Richmond Park

Jack, the first has some nice autumnal colours but as you say there's too much going on, I'm not sure what the subject is and there's nothing to really grab my eye.

The second one is a good, sharp shot and the deer stand out well against the background. Two things that might be improved.

1. It would be better if at least one of the deer were looking towards the camera and the shot was composed to make that one the subject.

2. A more interesting sky, difficult to achieve without post processing as you need to expose for the subject, a graduated ND filter or in some cases a Polariser could help but I think these days most people either take two shots and stitch them or just manipulate the single image.

Hope you like the new camera and I look forward to seeing some more shots.

cheers

Dan

Re: Richmond Park

Hi J - have to agree with Dan's comments here. Just for your info...the first one's file size is over the forum limit of 200k. If you could keep your eyes on that for the future - many thanks.

Re: Richmond Park

You went to Richmond Park and you didn't come to see me on Wimbledon Common!!??

The sharpness in that first photo is incredible though....you do feel like you could reach out and touch the moss. I love photographing the deer in the Park, last time I did that it was just as the rutting season was starting and you really did not want to be getting too blimmin' close!!

Re: Richmond Park

agree about the first one, my first thoughts were." lovely colours, but what is the photo of?" no focal point or subject.......... second one is nice but like Dan says a deer faing more towards you would have just finished it off.

My dad did suggest that as we were heading towards Richmond, I only ended up having about 1/2 hour shooting , but I didn't know you were around there

Damn right, this is a rather huge crop, I wasn't getting close, rutting season or not

Yes, I know about the first one...meh, I'm pleased witht he sharpness of the D50 and lens at least
As for the second one, it was actually turning around and about to walk away at this point so I had to grab the shot fast. Have some others with deer facing me, but none of stag, and he was the most impressive
Also, I didn't have that much time to take the shots, as there were some noisy kids running towards the poor deer, so they weren't gonna stick around

Thanks for all your comments guys, they weren't as bad as I expected .
Steve: it was only 16k over...does that matter? Not questioning your rules, just wondering what the exact reason is...

I'm afraid it does matter J - there has to be a ruling or site resource will suffer. If we let one through at 16k over then the next one thinks "well it's only 25k over" and it goes on until it becomes a free-for-all. You can always insert a small image with a link to an off-site larger image if you want people to see the full sized image. Thanks for your understanding.

Re: Richmond Park

This one is a good shot of the deer and works fine. I'd prefer that one to be differentially focused with a wider aperture so those trees are not pin sharp as they tend to pull attention away. Other than that, good shot

Cheers,
Rob
