Roof of Africa 2006 - offroad race

I took part in the race, racing a honda trx450R atv. It is an incredibly tough offroad race that effectively zigzags across lesotho (a small african kingdom that is surrounded by south africa on all side and is know as the mountain kingdom). We covered over 700km in 3 days, 300 quads started and less than 50 finished. I came about 20th overall and 4th in my class.

Obviously I wasn't able to take nearly as many photo's as I would like to have, but every time I could I grabbed the camera, and my dad also took a couple while I was racing.

One of my favourites, love the action, little CC appreciated...

Not great technically, but like the composition. I was still in full riding kit, so considering, not bad...

Me, about 50km from the end exhausted! Taken by my dad...

Typical lesotho terrain, both by my dad...

A couple of action shots I got after riding the first day, again a little CC considering the circumstances appreciated...

Our mechanic, and my friend, great guy...

I normally object strongly to these, but, the compulsory sunset shot... haha :P

Some great shots there (except the sunset, of course! LOL!) - looks right knackering!

I guess it'd be good to get some shots with the plume of dust and maybe some with motion blur, but so easy to be wise after an event (and from the comfort of an armchair!)

Re: Roof of Africa 2006 - offroad race

I like Nos 1, 2, 6 & 7 as they all give a feeling of action and a little speed. Number 3 is weaker in those aspects, though the wheels are motion blurred when you look at them, they just don't stand out to show the action.

Number 4 & 5 don't really do much for me. They are decent enough record shots but will mean more to you as the person who was there than they do to anyone else IMO. However, 4 does show some of the rugged terrain and 5 shows how hilly it is so I guess within the set they do take their place.

Not keen on the angled person shot. I appreciate the effect it is trying to achieve, just don't feel it really does much compositionally. However, the focusing and lighting is superb on that shot and the sky detail is excellent so as a picture it has definite merit.

The sunset is....errr.....a sunset :o) Could lose the top 3rd of the picture without really losing much. The sun is very central though the silhouette of the hills does work nicely.

Looking at these as a complete set, they work superbly well and really show us something of the event. I would like to see something added in that shows how arduous the event is: a filthy sweaty face drinking from a water bottle or something. Apart from having you tell us it was tough, I don't think the set actually tells us that pictorially.

I am entirely sure it was though! Got over the numb bottom yet? :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Tim, echoing the above, nice set of shots giving a good look into what one of these race's entails, along with the amazing terrain. TFS

p.s I'm quite liking the compulsory sunset shot

Haha, thanks for the comments everyone!!

Wasn't meant to be a set of photo's showing perfect event coverage, more trying to share the experience with you guys than the, in my opinion, very bland photography.
