Rugby photos
NEC Harlequins were playing a short 1st team v "the rest of the squad" today and I was able to get down to the training ground to take some pictures. We dodged the rain and I managed to get a few halfway decent shots. I took about 200 shots and 37 were reasonable with a handful of those worth sharing. Overall I'm pleased with the results, from a personal point of view anyway!

Re: Rugby photos
Thank you!
Although without the advice of the peeps here I don't think I would have got as many decent shots as I did so thank you to them! |

Re: Rugby photos
Great 1st attempt Angela. Glad to see you have posted the tight crop shots, which add real drama to the shots. Seems you had the shutter speed just right, as you get the feeling of movement, yet sharp enough to capture the detail.
Well done |

Re: Rugby photos
Thank you!
Just one question, I had the focusing area set on "spot" rather than "wide" and although that has worked on a lot of the shots - making one player the sharper focal point and the rest slightly out of focus - which was what I wanted to achieve, I suspect that is what may have rendered some of the other shots useless (I have a whole raft of shots that would have been great if they'd been in focus!!). Would I have been better using "wide"? |

Re: Rugby photos
Taking a look at your first shot, where the guy with the ball is in focus & the rest out of focus, plus you have some slight blurring from the shutter speed, I would say you were at the optimum settings. Eg. You couldn't get more depth of field of focus without using a slower shutter speed & thus no sharp shots.
The only way you could have improved the situation would have been to up the ISO & accept the potential grain / noise in the shots. Try practicing with the dogs again at ISO200 & then again at say ISO1600. You will find with the latter you can either use a faster shutter speed to freeze the moment, or a higher f/stop aperture to get greater depth field. |

Re: Rugby photos
What a great 1st effort at action shots
A little higher shutter speed could help a bit in the future, but perfecting your panning technique with practice will help offset this... good work!! |
