Rust

Not sure if anyone cares for this kinda stuff but I do! It's a rusty pole I came across in my travels yesterday. Comments always welcome of course.

It looks kinda abstract, maybe a little moodier lighting may have worked, I like it! I know what you mean though when you say "Not sure if anyone cares for this kinda stuff but I do!" I do lots of wierd stuff that im sure only I will like and as such never sees the light of day.

Hey Jewel, do you have the EXIF for that shot?

I personally like shots like this but they are tricky to get right. I think it needs to have a rusty feel to it as well as the visual side of things. If you think about what that post probably felt like then you should try and interpret this into the picture.

Sorry, not coming across too well there, what I mean is that to me rust feels gritty, abrasive and damp. These are the feeling I would want to portray in a photo of rust. To get the gritty and abrasive feel you need to have a really sharp shot (which is why I wanted the EXIF) which I don't think you've managed to get but that is probably due to JPEG compression. To get the damp feel I think you need to boost the contrast slightly and maybe darken it slightly.

Of course these are just my opinions.

Sam

EXIF: 70mm
F4.5
1/40 shutter speed
ISO 200

Do ya need more than that Sammy? hmmm looking at that data I'm guessing where I went wrong was a slow shutter speed eh?

Possibly. I was told that as a rule of thumb, your shutter speed should not be any quicker than the reciprocal of your focal length, so for a 70mm focal length, the longest shutter speed you should use is going to be 1/70s...

No, that's what I was after. And, yes, I agree that its probably the cause of the softness.

Are you going to try again?

yeah I 'll get out there again over the weekend and try again Sammy. As for the slow shutter speed I was just thinking there Chris I shot this in AP mode. I dont' shoot manually. Anyhoo there is definately some shaking going on there too. Me nerves are shot these days, lol. Again thanks for the quick feedback.

Try shotting it in continuous mode i.e. where it fires off 4 shots or so in case its the pressing of the shutter button that is causing the movement.
