Safari Shots (Archive from 35mm film) - 1MB warning
Inspired by Shakari's latest shots, I thought I would scan in my shots taken back in 2000 with an Olympus OM1-N....35mm film, manual everything
I think the maximum zoom I had was 200mm, so approx 130mm in DSLR terms. Scanned with cheapy scanner from 5 years ago, so don't expect miracles. These shots can be viewed in my Gallery if you don't want to see all 8 here ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Safari was in Kenya over 3 locations :-
Voi Safari Lodge - Tsavo East National Park (excellent 10/10) Ngulia Safari Lodge - Tsavo East National Park (7/10) Shimba Hills Rain Forest Lodge - Shimba Hills Game Reserve (8/10) Quick story behind the Lion shot. At Voi Safari Lodge they placed a man made water hole at bottom of hill. You could walk down part open, part closed tunnel to a concrete Den which was approx 30 feet from water. One night at 02:00 heard crying of a buffallo & then guards shouting "Lion". I ventured out & down the 200 yds steps to the Den to see a pride of lions had pinned a buffallo down. It took them an hour to kill it !! I was down there with only 1 other tourist & 1 guard with a rifle. If you made a noise the lions would look straight at you....talk about bricking it. it was the most horrific yet enthralling thing I had ever seen. Anyway suddenly 2 lionesses ran straight for the Den & jumped over the top ! The guard legged it up the stairs leaving us. This was the only way out / in & I thought it best to leg it also. To say I have never been so scared in my life is an understatement !! Made it back to room & missus thought I had seen a ghost Next day found out the lions had chased off hyenas & the guard was concerned the Hyeneas may come into the den !! |

Great Pics. I could see it was East Africa by the animals and then to a lesser extent the terrain. I couldn't comment on the photographic aspects as I don't know enough about them (except to say they're fabulous!) but you were incredibly lucky to get that shot of the curious baby Elephant....... the females are usually very protective indeed of their young and it's not often you get to see much more than the feet of one so young......

To be honest I was limited on Composition of most shots, as taken from a Minibus. Part of me would have loved to have the Digital kit I have now, but then again I can remember going out in a white T-Shirt & coming back red from the dust !!! ....not good for ones' kit

its a picture........ it goes to show that 35mm aint as dead as we all think, lets face it, the format was ( and still is ) around for 70+ odd years , it had to have done something right the only drawback as far as i can see is the waiting for the processing to happen just imagine how you could ' tweek ' these imagaes today with a new scan and runing em through PS great shots, maybe youll get a return visit one day..
