Yes - I know what you mean. You need the highest ISO you can squeeze to get a fast shutter speed. I presume flash was out of the question.

still relatively novice so camera was set to auto, I covered the flash with my finger to prevent glare lol

i recently took some similar shots of aquarium fish with a flash and discovered that if you took the shot at 45 degrees to the glass the flash did not reflect back thru the lens causing glare in the photo- took a bit of trial and error but it worked

That's because (it's physics time...) the angle of incidence (the point where if light hits it no light is reflected back) for glass is 42 degrees, near to your figure, so you are right! Just thought you might be interested (see dave, I am revising )
