Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
That is one way to suffer through wife's shopping. I am going to have to try it.
Very cool shopping center. skip |

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
Thanks Charlotte. You hit the nail on the head about exposure. In that mall there are overhead domes letting light in and it's murder trying to get the exposure right.

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
Mmmm, that Sigma 10-20mm is flaunting itself at me again ... When I sussed it out online, I spotted the 15mm f/2.8 which I wondered if it'd be better ... any thoughts?

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
Well, it is a bit faster, but I think the 10-20 will give more flexibility and at the wide end is able to add to shots by way of the distortions that can be harnessed to give drama to an image.

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
D'you really think the extra [?? degree] angle makes such a difference as to be worth choosing it over an extra f-stop, bearing in mind that it's only a 5mm FL difference?

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
So far I seem to be using 10 much more than 20 but the range is there. With a 30D it has such fantastic IQ at high ISO the loss of one stop doesn't worry me.

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
Thanks for that Stepheno. Can I ask what processing you did on these? (to gauge how much of the quality can be attributed to the lens)

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
I only used some Fill Light to brighten the shadows. Here is the unedited RAW file, converted to a 4.8mgb jpg and resized for web. Hope that helps.
Oh and I cloned out the spotlight at top centre ![]() ![]() |

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
I like those, you've captured the feel of the place very well. I'd love to try something like this but I'd be scared of getting asked what I was doing/escorted off the premises - I think some of the shopping centres you need to ask for permission before taking any shots and most of them are okay with it.
Think my favorite is the last shot with a top down view on the people going about their business. |

Re: Shopping....with a 10-20mm
Thanjks for your comments Matt. I tend to be a bit up-front about public/candid shots - if you just get on with it nobody seems to bother but if you look furtive or worried about being seen then you will. Security guards can only ask you to stop shooting, which I will, but it only happened once (touch wood) and that was in a store.
Where I will definitely ask permission is in a museum/stately home etc. |
