Silverstone (Yet another thread!)

Here's one of the better pics I have processed so far from my trip to Silverstone yesterday -

Large version HERE

I would recommend looking at the large version as so much more detail is apparent.

I'm really pleased with this one, but overall was quite disappointed with my days efforts.

A few things I learned -

1) Panning is harder than I had thought. I only managed to get down to 1/500sec with any success
2) There are FAR too many fences at Silverstone
3) Even with 340mm of zoom (Nikon 70-200mm VR + 1.7x TC), I often found myself somewhat short of reach!

All comments appreciated

Thanks
Chez

nice pic m8, great colours, especially the full size one,

where abouts were you stood ?
as i only used my 28-200 if lens, and i could fill the frame from where i was stood on the apex of luffield, and the wires were low enough to rest the camera on all the time,
i didnt take one shot out of the 200+ with any wire of mesh in the frame

were you up on the stands opposite the pit lane entrance for that shot ?

i found the best way to pan was pck the car up as soon as possible, then snap when u needed to
it worked for me anyway, tho i did chop of a few noses n spoilers ,lol but you can throw them away

Thanks MP.

I initially stood at Luffield and was fine from there (and this was the best spot in terms of fences).

I then tried the grandstand you mentioned for this shot, a grandstand further down the pits straight for some others (fences were a real issue here).

In the afternoon, I was in the centre and really struggled to find a good spot, until me and my mate managed to find an area with no Marshalls, where we copuld have walked onto the circuit if we had wanted. Managed to get a few shots from there (although didn't want to get too close to the circuit as the drivers could probably have seen us where we were and didn't want to cause a crash!) until a Marshall came and ushered us back into the spectator areas (spoilsport! lol)

Had a great day, but didn;t really come up with many keepers.

Might try the hospitality package next time. £85+VAT per person and you get to sit on the inside of the complex at brooklands...there didn;t loko to be too many fences there from what I saw..

Thanks EosD.

I had a great day, nonetheless!

I'm not too upset as it was my first time shooting motorsport with an SLR..

I'll just have to try again in September

Great shot Chez, you've done well to capture that car sharp, especially at the speeds they were travelling at.

I agree - the Maclaren is a weird shape at the back (basically the engine cover).

I agree about the little flicks and things- which explains the picture of the renault bodywork above - not a great photo, but I saw it and had to get a snap of it.
