Sisters
Thought I'd post this one here as I've posted one up in the critique section as well.
This is another one from the weekend, I have the upmost respect for professional photographers taking pictures of children. I was on my own that day trying to stop a) the youngest falling of the coffee table b) both looking at the camera c) holding the reflector d) and finally taking the picture. ![]() I think personally I've overdone the conversion to mono and lost some of the detail, and the eldest eyes are a little dark as her heads looking down. Comments please ![]()

Re: Sisters
Wow! What a fabulous shot, Ian
The little 'un's white top looks a bit blown, but other than that, well, just wow! |

Re: Sisters
Taking kids pics is second in difficulty only to taking a self portrait
![]() Good job here. This one works well in mono, perhaps just a smidge more contrast. If you have the color in this one too, I would like to see it. skip |

Re: Sisters
LOL! Well, you succeeded in achieving your objectives and got a good shot in the process! I might be tempted to crop out the space on the LHS as think it would make a stronger image

Re: Sisters
Don't agree with skip's suggestion of more contrast, that would make the light harsher when you want to keep the softness of this kids shot.
Tried Mark's suggestion to crop LHS but thought it made the image unbalanced. I maintain that it's absolutely fine as it is ![]() |

Re: Sisters
Charlotte - I was being imprecise. I meant adjusting the white and black points a tad. This may be just a bit too much, but do you think it is more arresting?
![]() skip Rob I agree that a lot of time for small children color is better. (see my comment in critique section - "baby blues" "I am not a fan of selective coloring either. In fact, I am not really a fan of children in mono because their skin is so smooth that in mono it comes out sort of featureless. Older people with blotches, warts and wrinkles are much more interesting in mono.") In this case I think the mono works well. But I, too, would like to see this in color to compare. Re: Sisters
I think I'd prefer this in colour (Sorry, I just don't get the instant 'let's go mono' idea all the time) to give it more warmth but I can't fault the composition which i love. I don't mind the eyes at all, they have a cheekiness about them which is very endearing.
Great shot again Ian. Cheers, Rob |

Re: Sisters
Ah, yes skip, I do like what you've done there
Isn't it funny that I'm no mono fan, but I really like this shot in mono. It'd prolly look great in colour too, but it would not make me like this mono version any less. |

Re: Sisters
In this case I still like the mono better.
But the color image can be improved, I think. It is a bit too red, and maybe a bit too saturated. That is easily fixed. The bg sheet can probably be dodged to make it whiter. But minor changes notwithstanding, it is a wonderful picture. skip |

Re: Sisters
He He, I ought to start another thread "How to take pictures on a budget"
1) White sheet - £9.99 (Dunelms) 2) Lighting stand - £14.99 (Maplins) 3) Piece of wood - £Free (Garden shed) 4) Trying not to make it all fall on top of two small children - Priceless !! |
