Smoke gets in your eyes
You can get some fascinating shapes from rising smoke, each time it's unique.
![]() I lit and blew out a candle so that a trail of smoke would rise from it. A black t shirt in the background and the smoke lit from the right and behind by flash. |

Very surreal - looks especially good in black and white. Makes an interesting alternative to the light drawings people have done in the past.
Great stuff |

I REALLY like that!! What did you use to generate the smoke? Please can you tell me how you did it so I can pinch your idea and claim it was mine?

Nice
![]() Whats the scale of this? Up close and macro just above the candle or is this bigger swirls from further out? And the flash position you mention - do you have off camera flash(es) or are you reflecting light from the flash on the camera? |

Robert they are crops of interesting bits from the full frame (using the Sigma 10-20mm at 20mm) The camera is about 40cm from the candle and the flash is about the same distance. It's an old Centon flash that I bought years ago for my Pentax film camera but it works fine on the Canon in manual mode. I have it set at 1/16th power and have the camera also in manual mode, a couple of test shots was all it took to get the exposure about right.
At 1/16th power the flash is capable of firing many times in quick succession, I have the camera in multi shot mode and fire off two or three shots as the smoke rises, 1/100th @f10 to try and keep a good depth of field.
