Was trying my hand at some smoke pictures at the weekend, what works best, a white or black background ??

I like both!

Seems to me that you've picked the right colour background for the subject in either case.

But the white suits the colours as does the black. Also how are these done, I'd love to have a go. Can you post a mini tutorial on this thread.

I prefer the white one just on the content alone (not mirrored like the black) but both backgrounds suit the shots.

These are great. Not sure which I prefer - both are excellent but maybe the white one just wins, for me.

I'd go for the white background too - it looks beautifully simple. How are you doing these? They look great...

I love both and you've done a cracking job with them Ian. One tiny point, I don't think the white BG needs a double line frame. It is fighting slightly with the picture so maybe worth dropping back to a single line.

Lovely stuff, very effective. I've seen this done a few times but none better than yours

I like both a lot, but agree with Rob that a single line frame would probably suit the white one better.
