Had a go at some bike action on Sunday
Really enjoyed it but not so easy to get the sense of motion and wheel movement
would appreciate any c&c as I know very little about this

Did you try any at less than 1/400 sec ?

No nothing less than 1/400.
I got it all wrong, I thought I needed very fast ss but found out that to get the motion on wheels you need to be slower than I though. I saw some shots form others there afterwards and they were down to 1/200 and had sharper pics than mine!!

Yes they will have probably been panning around 1/160 or as you say 1/200 of a sec.

It's still a good picture, as the background is nicely blurred with bike and rider sharp. Yes some motion blur on the background would have improved the image but that's something you can work on.

To start off with I found the idea of shooting at 1/100 at 400mm to be totally alien but having had it explained a couple of times I now realise why it works that way. It is something of an acquired skill though, one I'm still working on myself!
