Re: something from the weekend

All very nice indeed Fi, first two are stunning, particularly like the first, just a shame about the burnt out sky in both of them...any chance of salvaging it again in RAW conversion?

probably jack, but to be honest its worse in the low res one, there is detail in the cloud in the hi res version.

Hi Fiona,
the colour shot of 'Paddys Milestone' [it is Ailsa Craig aint it?] is very effective and I'm glad the sky is ok on the Raw file. The wee ET creature [Chipmunk?] is also very appealing and you have captured the Waverley in her element here, lovely.Every year I remind myself "must do a sail on the Waverley" but have never got round to it. Yet.

Yeah, like the shot of PS Waverley which used to come down to Penarth in the summers - IIRC, the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world

Re: something from the weekend

I much prefer No 2 to No 1, the rocks are a bit too central and the clouds definitely too bright. I am assuming this was with your wide angle lens to give the FG the strong feel and that has worked well. I don't like Ailsa Craig in No 1 just because it looks like a bit of an after-thought as it is so small. This is bound to happen with the wide angle lens but for me I am not sure the picture benefits from having AC in it at all. I think I'd focus on just the stones in the FG and crop across to decentralise them a bit.

I love the colours of the rocks in No 2 but think you could do more to bring them out with this one. The brightness in the sky is central but the brightness on the rocks is to the left. I think you could lift the lighting more towards the centre of the rocks to make those gorgeous oranges really steal the show. The large rock centre FG could really be more dominant and draw the viewer on in to the rest of the shot. So, a bit more work in PP for that one but the raw materials are definitely there, lovely shot

The kangaroo is nice enough but doesn't do a whole lot for me. i think the strong shadows across mum's face is the problem but I think you could help this pic by lighting the body of mum and burning down the bright grass beyond which is making her seem darker and drawing the eye away from baby where it should be.

The monkey, marmoset I think but not certain, is lovely but crop off the top brown band so we just have the white above the head. If possible, just burn down slightly the tiop of the nose to see if there is a touch more detail there. Other than that I love the inquisitive pose, great

Not sure about Waverley. Just that it's so commonly photographed now that I am looking for something stronger to make it stand out from the rest. Don't get me wrong, it's ok, it just doesn't do much more than provide a record shot of the boat. She has spent several summers down here running trips from Bournemouth pier over to the needles and out along the Jurassic coastline so went on here then but haven't seen ehr recently. I think I'd like this shot pulled back just slightly to give a bit of space at the front of the ship. Otherwise it is nice enough.

Interesting variety here Fi, well done. Good to see you making good use of that wide lens

Cheers,
Rob

Re: something from the weekend

I really like the first shot. I have similar shots as well, next time try dragging the shutter a bit, it gives a unique soft/milky effect to the water. Just to try something different.
I rather enjoy the burnt out sky look. Great shot!

I do not like the Kangaroo photo, marsupials give me the creeps...I see a look of sheer frustatration on that Kangaroo...as if she wants to tell her Joey its time to leave the pouch!
