Don't know about ripping it to pieces as the detail's spot on.

Can't say I particularly like the flash which has left the background very dark (and probably didn't do the owl any favours!) as well as giving that slightly flat, shadowless result that flash imparts

i know mate. lol, glad u like the owl, i do agree with markulous about the background being a tad flat, but, i think the foreground image is nice, but that is the problem with flash i suppose

As for the owl, yes it's a good shot. I wouldn't say it's "stunning" nor "spot on" though (here we go ... ) Why not? Well, the beak + eyes have sharp detail, but this does't extend to all of the feathers; therefore, I would've liked to see more DoF. Also there are blown highlights on the top of its head + at the bottom edge of the frame. I find it's wind-swept left ear (on our right) distracting.

Still, a good shot, aside from these niggles

i agree a little more DOF would improve it a tad, i shot at 6.3, i should have gone to f11, anyway, and the blown hightlights, i did notice them, the ones on the top of the head were more obvious, but thought the ones on the bottom were acceptable?

You're right, the blown highlights at the bottom are minor; it's only 'cos the ones at the top draw attention, making perfectionists like me obliged to then examine the whole image for imperfections

i agree with Charlotte, the highlights at the top of hte head do distract the eye, the flahs also hasnt dont it any favours as to be honest at first i thought it was stuffed!

lots of nice detail in the feathers tho, a "nice" image no more no less.
