Re: Stormy Cold Front!

That is a strange sky in No. 1 abd the sea surface is also very strange. Everything looks artificalal. I think I like it but I am not 100% sure.

No.2 has a very sloping horizon. That just looks wrong and is one think that should always be corrected. Apart from that it is good. Has a feeling of complete desolation about it.

Re: Stormy Cold Front!

Took me a few moments to work out what No.1 was, the black line across the horizon really threw me and I'm not sure why it's there. Beautiful golden colour though!

The 2nd is an interesting shot, I like the sky and the overall scene but it does all look a little wonky as already mentioned.

Thanks Ray, I know what you mean about the black line, it looks very pronounced. It's were the the sea levels into the curvature of the earth. I took this at a very low level to the ground and I think that amplified the effect..

Thanks, on #1, I used a 2 stop ND grad to darken the sky. Other than that, nothing extensive.. I think going telephoto and and low to the ground gave this a very different effect. On the second, I honestly thought it looked better without straightening the horizon since the pole counteracts. I get alot of comments about my choice of Horizon levels, I have a habit of throwing the textbook out of the window and going by eye, but I still have alot of learning to do

Re: Stormy Cold Front!

I'd far rather hae the telegraph pole leaning more (or you could lift it slightly if it is converging more than in real life) but not horizons, they need to be level or else look like the water would flow out of the picture. I do think that is the one line tha must be kept horizontal for the picture to work right.

No problem with thowing the textbook out of the window. Great to think outside the box (what the hell does that stupid cliche mean anyway? LOL) and recognise that there are few rules and many guidelines. Rules are not made to be broken (contrary to the opinion of some!) but guidelines are just that, guides that give us a sense of direction but are not meant to restrict us. A classic example of that is the misnomered 'Rule of Thirds' which in my opinion should be called the Guideline of Thirds as it is commonly broken very effectively in the right kind of picture.

So go for it Rumrunner, don't g by the 'rulebook' but go by what works. I think the majority of people would say a wonky sea/sky horizon almost never looks right but who am I to insist even on that? Let's see more of what you've got

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Stormy Cold Front!

Hi Rumrunner,, I like both of them, love the darks picks as I shoot a lot of them. I have had the same kind a line show up on some of my photo's, love the poles as I see them all the time and they look just right...keep up the good work, enjoyed seeing your creative efforts.

Re: Stormy Cold Front!

Hey rumrunner! Love that second shot, whereabouts in Delaware are they? I only ask as I spent a recent summer working in Rehoboth Beach, for Funland - have you been before? I had a great time in DE, would be good to see some shots of Rehoboth if you're down that way!!

Re: Stormy Cold Front!

no 1 great sky but black line is very distracting. No 2 poles are fine for me but IMO the horizon has to be level. Nice comp on no2

Hey Rob thanks for that, you speak words of wisdom. Now I'm not saying that my photo here shouldn't be leveled because I question it myself anyway, but you brought up a good point. What you say I believe is true, there is only suggestions for a starting point, but not rules. I have some photos that are centered or tilted horizon, and I think thier ok. Not always do you have to follow the rule, it just so happens that it works for most photos.

Here is a couple examples of what I think is ok in breaking the rules:

In this case, I think centering complimented by using symmetry to create the focal point

In this case, I thought tilting the horizon gave perspective and also depth

Garsh, good to hear from a fellow Delmarvin. These are from the Kelly Island area. I've been to Rehoboth many times, haven't been to Funland yet though. So your only there in the summer,? Here is one from the Polar Bear Plunge last year

Re: Stormy Cold Front!

Not quite a Delmarvin, I'm Scottish, but did spend 3 months in Rehoboth and the odd day in Dewey/Lewes. I don't think i'll be visiting West Rehoboth again though, that place was scary!

The water in Rehoboth is freeeeezing, even on a hot day, so I can't imagine how cold all those crazy people would've been in that photo!

Just looked up some of the places I used to go to...Zoggs, Rams Head and ARENA'S!!!! Yumm...im hungry!
