The Strid

This was taken last year in North Yorks, a place called The Strid, it seems to have lost a bit of saturation during the upload but yet another sat on my HD doing nothing so thought i'd share.

Re: The Strid

Gi' us a chance, guv!

Image is all about the water but that's somewhat muted and pushed into the BG with the bright rocks tending to dominate. Had a quick and dirty edit to show you what I mean

Dodged water, burned rocks - and also burned back the little rock pool in bottom left. Pool had interesting possibilities but only showing half didn't help the main image

Stu, that's because you need to convert to sRGB for the web

Re: The Strid

Hi Stu....I know the Strid well, on my patch so to speak. To me this is an instance of when the slower shutter speed, to blur the water, doesn't work. As you have been there you will be aware of the almost chasmic qualities of the rock formations and by blurring the water you have lost this.

The Strid is a dark and foreboding place which needs to be conveyed through the deep and dark pools rather than white water. Here is a shot I took a while back - no better than yours, just showing the Strid in a different light. HTH

Re: The Strid

I tried to see this shot the other day but the forum said error, so that's why I didn't comment. It's a good shot but I can see Stepheno's perspective as well

Re: The Strid

I wouldn't say the blurred water doesn't work but I do think the shutter speed was a tad too slow, blurring it too much. The blurring generally works best when there is still a bit of texture within the flow to give interest. There are enough stones and things to give a bit of detail in the way the water flows down in the FG area so a shutter speed about half the one used here would be more effective I think.

Compositionally I think it works very well with a good diagonal river and some interest in the FG rocks and foliage. Interesting shot.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: The Strid

Cheers guys, thinking about it this is a stretch of river that flows extremely quickly so i guess i didn't need such a long shutter speed, your points have been duly noted i tend to over blur alot of my water shots something i must watch in future.

Thanks for all your tips
