It was inevitable that I'd have to do a shoot at the Glasgow Barrowland venue one day but, with it being the usual place for hard rock and metal acts to play, it has a notorious reputation for 'beer chuckage' that has made me steer clear of it... one photographer had his new D3 ruined when it got doused by a pint at a Babyshambles gig just a few weeks ago!
Anyways, last night Canadian rock band Sum 41 rolled into town so I headed out to shoot them - and what a blast that was; it was the most well-lit gig that I'd shot in a long time... I was shooting as low as ISO 200, 1/250 sec and f/4 at some points ![]() Coupled with Deryck Whibley's on-stage energy and enthusiasm, I came away with results that I was more than pleased with. Here's three of my favourites ![]() ![]() ![]() Hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I enjoyed shooting them! More can be seen at Getty Images |

Re: Sum 41
I love that the main good thing you identify about a Sum41 gig is the lighting

Re: Sum 41
Jack - the 'blazing' lights sure did take me by surprise... I had set my camera to 1/160, f/2.8 and ISO 800 which was fine for Deryck walking on stage then, as the first chord was struck... BOOM go these ultra-bright moving spotlights!
I totally blew out the first few frames and was frantically adjusting my ISO and shutter speeds to get the right exposure... I've never shot an indoor gig that was this bright! |
