Re: They are silent now.

I like #3. The image of the canons pointing at some unseen enemy off to the right is powerful. The lack of gunnery people, soldiers, etc, and the sheer quietude of the image are a great contrast.

Well done.

Re: They are silent now.

#1 does not do much for me. I think it would work better if the gun was pointing into some space and not at a wood, and I think the whole gun should be in the shot, not a crop across tha axle line.
#2 - this is better, but can be improved by the inclusion of all of the wheel (or maybe all of the gun) on the first gun. This looks a bit flat too and would benefit from an increase in contrast.
#3 - I like this one best. You have framed it nicely and it has the best dynamic range. From a composition point of view, the fence (or whatever) line is a bit close to the guns and maybe a higher viewpoint (not easy) or different angle more to the left might have given more seperation.

For a first attempt you have done well. Don't be put off by my comments, mono is a tricky medium. This might help, and also this. Got them from our Tutorials and guides forum.

Re: They are silent now.

(Forgive any repeats, I'm doing this crit before reading other comments, so that I'm not influenced by them)

#1 The sharp focus should be on the canon, not the trees. If you had shot this with a wide-angle lens, it would've had a lot more impact.

#2 The front canon is blocking our view of the others. A higher viewpoint would've allowed a clear view of them all, + perhaps rotate the camera, trying various compositions to find the best one.

#3 I like this a lot. It contains an optical illusion that seems to stretch the RHS edge so that it appears taller than the LHS edge This effect is kewl + exhibits a powerful demonstration of perspective + depth

The contrast is rather flat in the first two, but the third is much better.

All in all, well done on your first attempt!

Re: They are silent now.

BTW - and Dabhand16 missed this - you're only supposed to post one image per day for critique If you have several shots to show for comment, you can place them in the Sharing section + ask for C+C

Thank you Charlotte

The thought behind 1 was from the gunners point of view looking at the woods waiting for confederate troops to come into view

The 2nd well I what can I say other than I agree.

But again thanks for the input I have a lot to learn

Quite right, Charlotte I was too busy looking at the pictures. I'll move this thread to sharing where I'm sure cpd23 will still get the desired feedback.
