Re: Three from Dave!!!
Hi Davey,
There is loads can be said about these but I won't hog it all, I'll just mention one: The third picture. It's a good idea and is a very clear study of depth of field. However, in a study of colour I feel it has one serious flaw, IMHO. Because of the differences in wavelengths of the colours in a rainbow, the eye is more sensitive to those at the red end of the spectrum and less sensitive to those at the blue end. Conversely, as light diminishes, the reds will be the ones that are lost first and on down until only blue remains. That is why if you go out in the evening, anything red will be severely muted down and virtually impossible to tell the shade whereas blue appears to be everywhere. Likewise if you go diving in the Red Sea or somewhere equally colourful, as you go deeper and light is unable to reach through the water, the reds disappear very quickly. Shine a torch and they magically reappear. So, how does this affect a photograph? Well, if you put two wooden blocks, one bright red, the other dark blue on the same plane (i.e. next to each other) you will see that the red block appears forward of the blue block. The little saying that is worth remembering is this: 'Red proceeds, blue recedes.' In your picture, the red pens are at the back and the darker pens, including blue, are further forward. This gives an effect which confuses the eye as the red is leaping forward but the blues are receding yet the blues should be in front. If you look at your second picture (yes, I know I said this was about the 3rd pic but it is the same point I am making!) the coloured pencils are the 'right' way round with the reds slightly forward of the blues and the colours 'sit right' in the picture. May i make a suggestion: try the felt tip pens shot again but reverse the order of the colours and see what a difference it makes. I am sure you will find it makes the picture feel much better. Hope all that makes sense, I'll let others talk about the other pics. Good focusing by the way :o) Cheers, Rob
