Re: from today

TBH not much appeal for me, here's why: Both skies are blown (looks irretrievable), colours are flat (straight raw's?), + I don't "understand" the compositions

Hope this will make you smile tho': the 2nd one reminds me of a two's-up, which is prolly what you felt about the weather (but hopefully not about my crit )

Re: from today

lol couldnt do anything about the skies unfortunatley.. i knew they were going to be blown and not a lot i could do about it as i havent got any filters.

They are not flat Raws and the colours have been lifted a fair bit, i wasnt wasnting to go OTT with them and make them look too much, perhaps i just didint go far enough.

Thanx as always and yep thats exactly how i felt about the weather as it started rainingn ust after these were taken and it hasnt stopped yet........ near gale for ce winds and snow supposedly on the way! ahhhh scottish weather dont ya just love it! heheh

Re: from today

I personally think the second picture in particular is fantastic. Sure, the sky looks like someone went a little crazy with bloom, but the blurred water behind the two trees gives it a very artistic appeal (in my inexperienced opinion.)
And as for the color, I would like to know how you achieved such a brown-saturated effect. I love it!

Re: from today

Hi fionaB,there are some days when the light, and weather, combine to make taking landscape shots very hard and this looks like one of those days .Not enough flora to grab the interest and flatish, directionless light. On days like this,if I was determined to take pics,I would normally think close-up and look down rather than up or try for some of the blurred running water type shots as there is no bright sun to burn out the water highlights. At least you went out and tried ,which is more than I did

If you use AE Lock (maybe set exposure to Spot meter first)
view sky
semi press shutter release to take exposure
press and hold AE Lock
compose and take pic

This will prevent burned skies

I use exposure compensation but I think your camera will only use that for bracketting (and only +/- 1.0 which may be insufficient)

Re: from today

i did use exposure compensation on some of them, no it doesnt just use it for bracketing, and i did try exposing for the sky.... the resulting image was so dark that bringing it up to a realistic level left a horrible result! lol the skyy was white. not grey etc....... a horrible horrible sky! lol i was hoping the being down in a gorge i could get some shots with not a lot of sky in but i have this thing about losing the tops of trees which kinda defeated the purpose... however just being out with the camera made me feel better! lol

Re: from today

On composition I will say well done for using the wooden bridge as a lead-in line. You clearly thought about that when constructing the shot so well done. I actually quite like the first one, forget the sky, that's as it is and nothing we can do about that now, but I do like the range of tones in the image foreground though it does go a bit flat in the distance.

Credit for getting out and taking shots on a flat day and still coming up with something to post

Cheers,
Rob

Re: from today

the bridge shot doesn't do much from me,. the 2nd shot if you crop out the sky at the top works better I think,.

if the sky is not going to work in an image then try not to include it,. for instance on the tree shot it might also work as a landscape crop
