Toolips....

Dear all,

Been taking a few pictures of some flowers recently and thought I would like you all to see the results....

I've tried a couple of things new to me- in particular the 'high key' attempt, would be interested to hear peoples thoughts

All criticism welcome- go for it!!!!

Matt

Re: Toolips....

Good work Matt! Absolutely LOVE the high-key ones, espially #3 Not too keen on the BG + hard lighting in #4. #5 Doesn't float my boat at all. Overall, well done with this set

Re: Toolips....

You have certainly tried a variety of things here Mouldy.

#1 I think the exposure is good, amd I like the plain background, but I'm not sure about the angle you have used with the flower. I've been craning my neck to see if a 90 degree rotate cw would improve it. I say this because then the leaf would be under the flower, at the moment it is competing too much for my attention. Also the flower would then be pointing left to right, a more natural diretion as it is the same way we read and write - so the flow L > R is more natural.
#2 This works for me and is the one I like best. Not too sure why, maybe the contrast between the out of focus LHS and the delicate detail in the other.
#3 I like this one better than #5. The stamen are nicely lit and the petals are both soft and detailed.
#4 Great detail on the flower, AND it's pointing the right way, but I don't like the mottled backround (maybe some free transform to the background give the illusion of clouds would be better?) or the leaf being both very close to the flower, and is above the flower, so tends to take precedence.
#5 I can see what you are doing, but the shot does not do it for me. Maybe if it were all in focus, maybe if there was more light on the stamen, but I'm not sure. I think that the petals are too tight, and give you only this angle to see the stamen.

I'm sure you are pleased with these shots. Technically good, for me the devil is in the detail! I think it is far more difficult to take a single flower than a bunch or an arrangement.

My pleasure - but remember it is only my opinion! (although Charlotte was on the same line).

Re: Toolips....

Nice set, although I have some comments:
High key ones: #3 without a doubt the best. Others a little too high key, and too much white space around them.
Others: Most of don't give enough of the flower to me, just the outside, whereas the inside is the most interesting bit! I know you did one of those, but really for that exact shot (as I learned recently), you need it to be on a tripod, with a very small aperture, to get everything in the flower in focus, rather than having the edges of the petals OOF, however I do like #1 and #4 in their own way.

HTH a bit
