Re: trail bikes

Hey

Don't like the first one....the angle is confusing.

The second is good, but I would like to see a bit more evidence of motion, spinning wheels, etc. In addition, the rear wheel seems to be hidden in the tree.

But this is a good shot, nontheless.

Re: trail bikes

im gonna disagree with skip on this one, i do like the first one. but i would love the red cross on the tree it kinda catches the eye too much.
seond one for me is good as well.... although i do agree a little bit of motion in the image would just finish it off!
nicely taken well done

Re: trail bikes

From the little I know about trail riding, I suspect that in #1, the bike is stationary. The angle that you have taken it does not really indicate that it is almost vertical. A higher viewpoint looking down would add to the rider's predicament.

In #2, I guess the front wheel would be spinning, and has been frozen by a high shutter speed that has captured the bike in exactly the position that Sean wanted.

Re: trail bikes

For me, the focusing is a bit soft, it isn't motion blur, it seems to be lack of depth of field. I am guessing this is due to needing as wide an aperture as you could to get a reasonable shutter speed but this is making parts of it a lot less sharp than it could be.

I am not entirely sure that the front wheel has to be spinning in the second shot. I think he will have pulled a wheelie to get over that trunk which usually has the effect of stopping the wheel or even spinning it very slowly backwards, either way not enough to suggest it should be a blurred circle at all.

The first shot looks like the whole scene was pretty dark so getting enough light in there is quite a challenge. The flash has done a pretty reasonable job of picking the rider out. One thing I will say is you got the timing spot on with that one. I am not sure why Skip finds the angle confusing as the trees clearly show which way is up so the bike is at a very steep, almost vertical angle up the bank. With a bit of motion blur, the scene would look a lot more dramatic though.

Interesting shots, have you got any more and could you give us some of the tech details, i.e. shutter speeds, apertures, ISO and type of flash?

Cheers,
Rob

Re: trail bikes

Thanks Ed, the tech info is helpful. I would definitely say the biggest weakness is the aperture which has restricted the depth of field too much BUT that was not really your fault as the conditions weren't giving you a lot of light to play with.

In this case, I don't think I would have put the diffuser on, that would have allowed at least another stop of aperture.

Still interesting work though and good on you for getting out there in yucky weather!

Cheers,
Rob

Re: trail bikes

You certainly caught the peak of the action, not bad considering the conditions.

Re: trail bikes

cheers guys.the only reason i put the diffuser on was i was a bit worried it would distract the riders more without it,as its only my third trial and i don't want to p**s any of them off, well not just yet anyway
cheers sean
