Truck crash

I was just going to go out to try and grab a shot for the copertition (Late again) when a alert came over the local radio about a road traffic accident>it was just up the road from me so in true Gary Bagshaw style off I went grabed a couple before the local constable decided to have a word He asked if I was with any one (I think he ment the press) so I said Im freelance and would be selling on he seemed happy with this and told me I could carry on I presume if i had said no i'm not with any one he would have told me to moove on

Re: Truck crash

Nice going matey, I usually have business cards on me to give to the plod in case they need any prints etc and most of the time they are very good and at times even helpful, I also say that I am freelance press when they ask me where im from and they usually just let you carry on as long as you dont get in the way.

Big mistake their Saw, if you've got a pic for the paper, get in it as fast as you possibly can. They have their own photographers who will have gone over and taken a shot but your best chance of getting a shot in is if they wanted one to go to press with and didn't want to wait.

As it happens, gruesome though it may sound, the picture and story are not as valuable to the newspaper if the driver was ok and stuff. it sounds terrrible but if the driver had been seriously hurt (or worse!) the paper would snap it up! Smashed up trucks and other vehicles are much more dramatic if they can write about a smashed up person at the same time. It's awful but true.

To give a smash picture more impact, don't include too much space around it unless it is clearly providing context. In other words, if it is the side of a railway embankment or a smashed up barrier on the central reservation then include it but if it is just the road and stuff, get in close and focus on what is really smashed up, it has a lot more impact than lots of empty space around it.

Whatever the press wants, i am delighted the driver was ok

Cheers,
Rob
