very happy with nikon d300/200-400vr

those who have been in "what camera to buy" know i just took delivery friday of the above camera and lens - the shots below are from yesterday trying to learn the new camera (up from the d200) and lens (up from the 80-400vr).

http://www.pixalo.com/gallery/showga...r/4649/cat/500

all at iso 200, aperture priority, all hand-held, pelican and great blue heron cropped a little bit......

in short, for the first time out with this gear i think it totally rocks! i never thought i would be able to hand hold a 7+lb lens that well.

my arms and shoulder are tired, i need to hit the weights so i can do better......

Nice set of pics, I particularly like the Egret (Heron?) with feathers blowing backwards.

Good pics, 0487 (standing heron) is a bit overly compressed so it doesn't look as good as I am certain it does in the original. When you are showing a shot this big and with lots of detail, I always recommend going for closer to the 200Kbs limit that Pixalo allows and which is nearly always enough to show a picture at a good sharpness, this one is only 68kbs and is showing compression artefacts because of it.

Lovely combination of shots though, I think storks, herons, pelicans, egrets, etc are a great family of birds to capture as they have strong contrast between the softness of the feathered areas and the sharpness of their long beaks and lovely clear eyes.

Glad you're happy with your chosen camera and lens combo... even if it is a N****

Cheers,
Rob
