Re: The view from my office

Nice little capture. i would definitely crop the top centre off to get rid of that little patch of blue sky as it spoils the effect. A quarter of the photo is a black silhouette of a wall which is a bit too strong for me but you were restrained by whatever angle you could get from your window so I entirely understand. How about taking centimetre off the bottom as well and keeping it letterbox still. The lovely golden yellow would then dominate and the silhouetted branches would hold their own

Cheers,
Rob

Just cropped it to see if it helps and I think it does, what do you think?

Re: The view from my office

Hi Rob

I think that this is a better image, but I have a problem with the "letterbox" format.

If you wanted to print it in standard sizes, you would have to crop or change the size then crop. And then you would lose the effect.

Am I right or wrong?

Re: The view from my office

Rob,

The crop definately improves the image. To be honest, without risking life and limb I'm a stuck with the building as it is, I was leaning slightly too far out of the window as it was .

Losing the blue sky does impove the shot I didn't even notice it at the time!

Re: The view from my office

Yup Skip, to be honest I hadn't really considered this a shot for printing. It is very pleasant but I wouldn't put it up on my wall as it doesn't have enough interest to hold my attention. But as a simple view, the colours are lovely and I can see the reason the shot was taken.

With regards 'standard sizes' I have to say i long since moved away from those as I found them too restrictive. I bought a mat cutter and now cut my own frames to whatever size I need. If I want to frame it, I just buy mouldings in strips and use a mitre saw to cut the sides. If required, I get my local glazier to cut me a piece to size. I have to say I don't frame many for myself, only tens to be ones I have had a commission for and only then if they ask me for it. But it does mean I don't have to restrict myself to a set ratio if I want to crop something.

Letterbox can look superb, especially when hung somewhere like a hall or a landing where it tends to compliment the long narrow area better. You can buy standard mounts and frames now for 10:4 ratio pics. I did a pano a while back which I printed on A3+ paper to 19" x 7.6" and it was absolutely snapped up by the person who had asked me to find something for his wall! I ask you, what on earth do you do when someone says 'Fill that space' without any idea of what subject to use? I did a seascape of the cliffs along Worbarrow bay (Nr Durdle Door in Dorset) and he was delighted with it.

I have a vine picture that I am thinking of doing as a vertical 19"x7.6" as it lends itself to this size and shape beautifully. On a narrow wall, this would look great.... I think! Good to keep other sizes in mind and see what they can offer us but of course it depends on whether you have the necesary access to bourds, mat cutters, glazier and so forth to do custom sizes.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: The view from my office

Interesting, Rob. I still don't sell my images, so when I frame, it is for myself or my family. (They then HAVE to put them up.....sometimes on the back of the bathroom door!).

But the possibilites of custom frames are legion, and thanks for bringing them up.
