View from the top

Some shots from yesterday. All taken from the top of the Wendelstein (1838 mtrs) in the German Alps. The first three are with the Canon 70-200L and 1.4X teleconvertor and the others are multi shot panoramas using the Sigma 10-20mm. Camera body used is the Canon 20D.

fabulous shots........... almost makes me WANT to go an visit the bro in law......... ok i said almost.........
i hope they have chair lifts up those, only thing wrong with a mountain is that is spoils a nice walk! lol

Really great shots, you deal with snow very well (although I suppose there is no shortage to practice on!), #3 #4 and #5 are my favourites

The temperature at the top wasn't that bad as the sun was out pretty much the whole time and there was little to no wind.

On the left hand side of the last picture you should be able to see the cables running up to the cable car station

I've been a little under the weather for the last few days and am currently not fit enough to be walking up mountains, that's why we chose this one due to its easy access and good view point.

We don't get that much snow around here, more than in England but its not that common. To photograph it well requires you to remember two important things...the first is exposure, blown highlights are a killer with snow but most cameras will underexpose snow scenes by about 3/4 stop due to the way they meter and them registering the scene. Most of my 'snow' shots I have to dial in about a stop of over exposure as compensation. The second is to make sure you get the white balance correct. Snow is actually white unless its taking on the light from a sunset/sunrise so blue snow nearly always looks wrong

Yes, the sheer size and scale of the mountains always take my breath away. Unfortunately its very difficult to capture and convey that in every shot. Whenever possible I try to include the odd walker or something else to give the sense of scale (as in shots 2 & 3 near the crosses).

Great set of shots Steve,You can't beat the alpine air when its cold for its clarity.
My favourite's #1 (its 3D almost) and #5.
