The Whangie
this was taken at the top of the Queens View nr Drymen
It is called the whangie and the story goes that the devils whipped his tail in anger and split the rock in two, a healthy walk but well worth the view! The pano was done using 5 photographs. apologies if anyone has seen these before. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: The Whangie
I had to look just to find out what or who 'The Whangie' was
I think the third shot is probably the strongest of this set but I am sure that the pano would be impressive at a bigger size too. I have to say that the pictures (apart from 1) seem to be lacking a little punch though. They seem to have their dynamic range squashed just a little. That may have been your intention or it may not ??? |

Re: The Whangie
The first one is most impressive, sky detail and shadow.
Take a bow. |

Re: The Whangie
hmmmmmmmm thanx for the comments......... have to say that these were taken with my old camera earlier in the year and apart from the pano ( for obvious reasons) none have been thru PS. i may run them thru it later and have a play with the colours a little.

Re: The Whangie
I agree with Steve about the dynamic range. This is where the histogram comes in very handy and is well worth examining. Ok, so:
Pic 1: Without knowing this is supposed to be a landmark it is just a pointed shaped rock sticking up in the air. HOWEVER, it is very well taken with good colour and sharpness and detail in the shadow areas. Well taken, doesn't excite me much. Pic 2: This one is definitely suffering most from the lack of range, it is very flat so, taking a liberty here, I have pimped it to see what it could be like. The only thing I am showing here is the dramatic difference contrast makes. Hope that's ok Fi: ![]() Pic 3: Easily the best, love the composition here, really well done. Again the colour and dynamic range is all a bit flat. Looking at the histogram for it, all levels are represented but when taken into curves and the contrast lifted I think it makes quite a difference. I have cropped this a tiny tad but more significantly I dropped the top end (white) in the sky down so that it never gets to full white (burn out) which makes a difference I think. It keeps the eye on the beautiful view you have captured without drawing your eye away to a bright bit of cloud. ![]() I've seen the Pano before and it is a good one. Just needs the same range lifting using curves but to be honest, it is probably not looking its best on the screen due to heavy compression. I have a feeling your version, especially printed out, looks great. Hope you like what I have tried to do with them. The pictures are fine, it is only the lack of range that is making them flat. I think the 3rd pic is a real cracker compositionally, good work :o) Cheers, Rob

Re: The Whangie
LOL, I know what you mean. I am also the sort that thinks 'I have been there, got those shots, there are too many other places I want to get before I start duplicating!'
Obviously I have fave places that I do go back to again and again and I think that is important, especially at different times of the year and different times of the day, amazing how often you get a completely different picture of exactly the same thing. But if it needs a lot of effort, I say go find something else :o) There yer go, I've given you an excuse to go for somewhere less strenuous Cheers, Rob |
