Re: Which works best?

okies i like them both, the first one because it gives u an alround view with the tree as foreground interest.......... but i have to say i prefer the second one as the perspective on this is awesome. the angle it was taken at shows u got down low and this gives the viewer more of a feeling of actually being in the picture if that makes any sense whatso ever

Re: Which works best?

I like both of them, but my vote goes to #2, because I think it works better without the forground detail. Had I not seen the second one, the first one would have got a huge pat on the back, though.

Re: Which works best?

I prefer the first one. I think the crop in the second is to severe, particularly at the top, and it makes me want to see where the mountains go!

I will play devil's advocate here and say that, to me, they are not the same scene. It's a very difficult call, if not impossible, because I see them as two different shots. You could hang both on a wall and see different things in each. But if I could only hang one I would pick #1 because it has more going on, more points of interest, and you are led nicely in to what is, in effect, shot #2. So....two shots in one

Re: Which works best?

I have to say i prefer the second one, i was thinking the crop was too tight, but after going back and having a good look before writing it i am now thinking that a little more on the top or bottom or both probably wouldn't make it better.
The first one i am not a huge fan of because it is not really a shot of anything (for me), when i first looked at it i wondered whether it was a shot showing the detail on the shrubs in the foreground, or the lines in the field, or even maybe the building in the distance (the second one is a shot that knows what it is about and doesn't confuse the viewer). Maybe if the red shrub was slighly higher in the frame and you cropped a little off the bottom it would frame the building nicely giving the shot more of a focus.
I just feel there is too much detail that is in focus giving no emphasis to a particular part of the image.

Re: Which works best?

#2 without a doubt, there is no competition. The first image looks like a snapshot and my eye is wandering everywhere and not taking in anything, the red berries I also find distracting. The second image is superb, your eye is drawn towards the farmhouse/building by the field of lavender, it is a well composed and exposed picture and the letterbox crop suits it perfectly, it should be on the wall!

Re: Which works best?

Thanks for all the comments

I prefer the second shot out of the two which is good as the majority of you also like that one.

Colin is correct about the field leading down to the monastery being lavender, it is a shame that we where there about 4 weeks to late to catch them in bloom as that would have made an excellent shot with the purple rows offering contrast to the greens....maybe next year

Re: Which works best?

The pano-crop; I'm a sucker for large format prints at 30" x 10" or 45 x 15", and they look very impressive when properly framed and mounted.

Pano prints bring a feeling of being there since they immerse the viewer in the same way that a widescreen TV or a trip to the movies does, and they all mimic the way we naturally see the world.

Re: Which works best?

I would crop the bottom of the first picture ,but leave a bit of the bush with red berries,a bit of red seems to enhance all the other colours.Easy to check this roughly just scroll down to take apart of the bottom off the screen

Re: Which works best?

Hi steve,

The first is nice but the building doesn't appear to be particularly sharp and the out of focus plants in the FG are distracting in my opinion.

The second shot looks far far better, really like the composition, the leading lines really draw the viewers attention to the building and it has a good depth of field.

No.2 is the definate winner as far as I'm concerned.
