York Minster - the inside story

Due to popular demand.......

OK - excuses first! All of these shots were hand-held at between 1/13 and 1/2 sec, so you can't really make any judgements on the lens sharpness. I upped the ISO to 400. The was a lot of sun shining through the windows, so the light was quite warm. My recallection from a previous visit was that the interior lighting was very cold, but I quite like the warmth of these shots.

The Chapter House

You will see from the previous image that if I'd elevated the camera just a bit, I'd have got from floor level to the peak of the ceiling in this shot

The High Altar

The Quire looking toward the High Altar

The North Asile looking toward the West Front

I've got some more, but I think this is enough for now!

You did well with the exposure - only the bottom of #4 is a bit odd, a bit ghostlike.

Damn tourists! That was one of the 1/2 sec exposures and they were moving around.

Thats pretty good for that length exposure, well done. I must admit I like that bit of movement in #4.

Lovely shots Graham Only the 2nd one shows the disadvantage of an ultra-wide angle, but the others look good to me, nice work there

Thanks, Charlotte.

With regard to the comment on #2, I guess to some it is a disadvantage, and to others it could be an advantage.

I've not tried to correct the image, but might just try to see how it turns out. For sure, in outside shots the distortions can be really good, (well I think so anyway!), but in the end, it is a matter of taste.

Yes, converging verticals are less of a problem in outdoor shots - although I personally would restrict ultra-wide angle lenses (if I had one LOL) mainly to landscapes rather than architecture or people shots, or any shots with people in them, but as you say it's all a matter of personal taste. Anyway, that's what I meant: #2 is not only indoor but also contains people and articles which we know should be within certain proportions, however the shot has distorted them enormously. Whilst this could be used to advantage in creative photography, I don't think your shot falls into this category. Hope that's clarified my meaning a bit better. Not knocking your shot Graham, but my personal taste is that the distortion doesn't really go with this particular scene. Love the others tho'

Re: York Minster - the inside story

NP,Charlotte - I was not being defensive (honest). I can see what you mean regarding the people and furniture. Before I got this lens, I also thought landscapes were the domain for WA lenses, but it has opened up urban photography to such a great extent, I am looking at this subject with a different eye now, literally. Maybe I'm OTT with it, but it has been such a revalation!

Thanks, P-E. I'd like to have spent more time there with a tripod to attempt something better. Maybe next time.

Re: York Minster - the inside story

I like these Graham and have to say you did a great job hand-holding them. Given what has been said about Pic 2, I had a quick go at re-aligning it to see what it looked like and I am quite pleased with the result so I hope you will be too. I did adjust the contrast as well as it was a bit flat, hardly surprising in that light!

Hope you like it,
Cheers,
Rob
