York Minster in Mono
Yes, I'm still ploughing through my York pictures! I almost ran out of frame trying to correct the verticals, but I think I just about got away with it.

Re: York Minster in Mono
Nicely comp'd and processed,Graham. Tho' I'm a little distracted by the bright highlights around the top right (looks like Shadow/Highlights artefacts but I'm sure that it isn't that!)

Re: York Minster in Mono
Thanks, Mark. The highlights in the top of the image are, in fact, (I think) the clouds. I had to really push the sky in this one as it was a fairly grey, bland sky, but I was amazed to find how much there was in the sky in the end. It could be a feathering issue, and I did try to burn it in around the building, especially in the bottom LHS, but it looked worse than just leaving it. I'll have to keep practising my burning technique, and feathering.
Feel free to pimp it if you can, but I always find trying to modify a low res image very difficult.

Re: York Minster in Mono
Oh I like this one, very interesting processing... the right side of the frame is a bit dark but other than that it's a top shot for me!

Re: York Minster in Mono
Thanks for the kind words.
I did not pay much attention to this one until now, but I'm glad I did. In spite of the flaws, I still quite like it. The problem for you now is that I'm going to have to have another look at the others I took, so there might be yet more to come! |

Re: York Minster in Mono
Nice conversion + processing Graham
Perhaps it was correcting the verticals that did it, but something has given the image a very flat look. I don't mean tones - tonal range is very good - but perspective looks very much 2D, like it's a photo of a picture, i.e. it seems to have lost the perspective which a wide angle lens should imphasise Could it be that the process of correcting verticals has an unfortunate side effect of somehow squashing the perspective in an image? ![]() |

Re: York Minster in Mono
Charlotte - I've found two ways of correcting verticals in PS. First is the 'proper' lens correction filter, and this was the way I did the corrections at first. It keeps everything true and as the frame tilts, the subject tends to go out of shot at the top unless you stop the correction early and keep some convergence. I've made a mental note to leave plenty of space at the top in future!
The second way is to use the free transform tool. This will correct the verticals but will also leave the height unchanged, and you then have to stretch the image vertically to put back the proportions. It may well be that both of these methods will remove some perspective in the process, and it might be that the middle gound is the way forward. Obviously, I've not had the lens for very long, so have not really had the chance to try many shots other than fully wide. However, one that was taken at the 20mm end of the range, and therefore had minimal corrections was the one of the Ouse Bridge that you liked. Perhaps this image is not suitable for looking for flatness in the perspective, but I think it is the only one that fits the bill. I'm also wondering if WA lenses also compress perspective like telephoto lenses do, that is, the more you get away from the 'normal' human view, the more the perspective changes. Food for thought. |
