40D Macro Stuff
Well, as I am still feeling a little low with my throat infection & fluey type bug (head full of nasty snotty stuff and a temperature
) I thought I'd treat myself to some flowers and sit down with the camera & tripod & have a go this afternoon to look at how sharp the jpegs are. These are the results, not particularly arty, but they are all from the camera, just cropped and sharpened with USM. The black and white backgrounds are made using different sides of my reflector. Very pleased with colours, they are true to original subject.![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: 40D Macro Stuff
Great stuff Sarah, particualrly at how good the focusing is. Did you use the Liveview method for that? I do and the difference is huge. The detail in the rose petals is superb.
You go girl, you done good ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: 40D Macro Stuff
Cheers Rob, yes, did use the live view for the rose and the cabbage, not for the chrysanthemum, thought I'd try both. It is really good though isn't it? I've also found the colour I'm getting in the shots is more accurate than the 20D as well, especially the pinks.

Re: 40D Macro Stuff
Live view on the 40D is using the lcd screen on the back of the camera instead of the viewfinder, you can either focus the whole shot, or zoom in 10x to a small area. It's a useful new addition for macro.

Re: 40D Macro Stuff
Sorry to hear about the persistent throatie Sarah, they are miserable. Here's praying for a speedy recovery.
You are spot on about the more accurate colours. It is down to the 14 bit A-D convertor which gives you 4 times the colour depth than is possible on the 12 bit system of the 20/30D. I decided to go the whole hog and upgrade my flashgun as well so have sold my 550EX on to a friend and bought the 580EX Mk ll which I think is pretty much a dream partnership with the 40D. With the good weather sealing on the 40D, the same on the L series lenses and again on the 580, the combination put together makes it a superbly assembled kit. It's almost the photographic equivalent of an off-roader LOL. I am going to the Lake District this weekend for a week (won't be coming online much if at all so don't be surprised if I go silent for 9 days) so am looking forward to getting out and about and doing some photography. It is so lovely now all my studying and exams are out of the way and finished and I can forget all about that and just do what I love most: grab my gear, head off to one of the most beautiful places on earth with the love of my life and just relax and enjoy ourselves with nothing more to worry about than which restaurant to eat out in next! :o) I know I hide it well but I'm excited! <g> Cheers, Rob

Live View. 14-bit A-D. Better focusing......
![]() Stop it! I can resist anything but temptation! ![]() Good pics, Sarah, especially the last one. Is it too early to write to Santa? |

Re: 40D Macro Stuff
I'm sure Santa won't mind an early letter, as long as you've been a very, very good boy this year
![]() Have a lovely time in the Lakes Rob. Sarah |
