B&W Landscapes

Went out yesterday to take some shots for this weeks assignment. Unfortunately the weather was a bit overcast so they didn't come out too well. Here's the best of what I got.

The first two where quite heavily processed. They are both built from the blue channel with the red taken for the sky, loch and distant hills. That's why the foreground is so dark.

#2 Talla Linnfoots 2

This one is simply desaturated, some levels done to the whole image, except the sky, then contrast added

Re: B&W Landscapes

Like the effect you are going for OP. I find the Blue channel OK for water but too heavy to handle for hillsides. I usually end up with green or red channels. If your after that extra bite in the foreground, try the following :-

- Use Unsharp mask at around 50 pixels (if full size shot) or 25 pixels for 1000 pixels shot, threshold 0 & then play with % until you get the effect you are after. This should give some good contrast.

Never ever use "contrast" in PS....it loses so much detail. Instead use a S Curve, which gives you real control with no image loss.

I need to get this new PC so I can capture above examples, as it's so much easier to show something than try to describe it

Your defintely on the right tracks for what you want to achieve & you've some great scenery there to play with

Really llike these OrangePeel, dark & moody. Just a shame the sky is so light. I hear others talking about adding a gradient in PhotoShop to darken skies, so would that help ?

Finally got round to fixing the sky as you suggested. Works much better now.

Can't see anything bigger than a thumbnail from links. Any chance of posting up larger versions, as the skies do look a lot better

Re: B&W Landscapes

exactly as MickB suggested.

The sky was never really gone. it was just my lazy processing when converting to mono and forgetting to mask out the sky
