Re: A few bugs!

All are excellent sir but the first one is by far the best. Looking at the shots carefully i am presuming that you are using fill in flash as well for these, is that a seperate flashgun or the on camera one?

Re: A few bugs!

Yes Steve, those were taken using the built-in flash. I haven't sorted the lighting properly yet for this type of shot. You really need both high speed and a small aperture, and direct sunlight can be almost as harsh as flash in terms of casting shadows etc. I've had most success when using flash, but there is a problem with direct reflections.

An external flash is so far off-axis at these distances that it casts larger shadows than the built-in one, and a diffuser doesn't help because the light is still coming from one direction and there's nothing to bounce it off.

I guess that's why people use macro ring-lights, but I haven't persuaded myself to get one yet! I'm going to try strapping the external flash to the lens hood and using on off-camera cord. It's possible that, with a Stofen and a larger light source, the effect may not be as harsh.
